Heath Ledger was officially cast as the Joker in The Dark Knight in August 2006. In November 2006, Ledger sat down for an interview with IGN, where he discussed his preparation for the role. During the interview, Ledger was asked whether he was anxious about succeeding Jack Nicholson as the Joker.

Ledger explained that he was not eager to follow in Nicholson’s footsteps and did not want to draw inspiration from his predecessor’s performance. Ledger explained his reasoning by stating the following:

“I’m obviously not going for the same thing he went for. That would just be stupid, and it’s also two very different styles of directors and filmmaking.”

At the same time, Ledger also revealed how Tim Burton’s take on the comic book characters in 1989’s Batman was different from Christopher Nolan’s take.

Ledger highlighted how Nolan’s take was more gritty and realistic. Therefore, imitating Nicholson’s performance in Nolan’s film would butcher the character and wouldn’t benefit the project. Meanwhile, Ledger also stated he was planning a sinister take on the Joker while leaving room for improvisation.

However, Ledger revealed that he was given one particular comic book to read while preparing for the role.

“The Killing Joke is the one that was handed to me. It’s really good. So I think [the film] is obviously going to be a bit [about] the beginning of the Joker.”

Ledger made the above statement referring to Batman: The Killing Joke, a graphic novel by Alan Moore, which briefly explores the origins of the Joker.
