Star Trek: Discovery premiered back in 2017 and was the 7th Star Trek show, and the 6th live-action series to have been released. It marked a new era for fans of the long-running space saga, set a decade before the events of the original Star Trek.
Regardless, Star Trek: Discovery has received more than its fair share of criticism. This is majorly due to its commitment to move away from the original narrative, and the unfamiliarity of the universe as far as its eventual 32nd century setting was concerned.
Still, the show has also been critically lauded, and one of the reasons has been the introduction of several memorable characters who have become an integral part of Star Trek as a whole.
Sonequa Martin-Green, who played the role of Discovery captain Michael Burnham, also said something similar. The 39-year-old actress suggested earlier this year that Star Trek: Discovery’s casting was something fans could simply not complain about.

Martin-Green leads the talented cast with her character of Michael Burnham, and believes the show’s casting choices are one of the major reasons for its success. Ranging from Doug Jones’ Saru, Shazad Vatif’s Voq, to Anthony Rapp’s Stamets and Wilson Cruz’s Hugh Culber, there are simply a range of characters that helped the audience move past the initial shock of just how different Star Trek: Discovery felt compared to previous shows.
Not only has the cast received laurels left, right, and center, Martin-Green herself revealed the kind of camaraderie that exists on the sets of Star Trek: Discovery (via trekmovie). Asked about Callum Keith Rennie, Rayner, the actress claimed the following:
Well, Callum Keith Rennie is brilliant, right? The casting for this show is just one of the reasons why we’ve been so successful. I could speak about all the people that have come and gone and left a mark on our show, that’ll never be erased. Callum came into our family, we welcomed him with open arms, just like we welcomed Eve Harlow and Elias Toufexis, who play really huge roles in the final season.
Of course, her character also shares a profound chemistry with Rayner, as Martin-Green suggested that it was something that came naturally, with respect to the cast.

Introduced in Season 5, Rayner is the newest major character on Star Trek: Discovery. A former Starfleet captain who is a Kellerun, Rayner is shown as a one-minded, no-nonsense individual who is set to graduate into an integral character as well.
While fans might appreciate the acting on display, Martin-Green claimed that she was grateful the actor hit the ground running on the series:
We hit the ground running, and I’m so grateful that you see that because chemistry is not something you can force. It’s not something you can predict, either. You have no idea if you’re going have it or not. But he’s such he’s such a brilliant actor and I’ve had the blessing to work with so many brilliant actors on this show.
So as a producer, I actually was not a part of his casting. I have been a part of casting before I played a small part in the casting of David Ajala… I love him so much.
With the show coming to an end after five seasons, Martin-Green, who was also a producer on Discovery, claimed that she was happy with how the cast did, and that they could not help but pat themselves on the back for how the show turned out, in the end.
