It’s not uncommon for actors to want to separate their work life from their personal one, with one example being Amy Adams, who doesn’t entertain taking her experience on set to home. Her American Hustle co-star Jennifer Lawrence is also in the same boat, as engaging in discussions about the movie she has been working on is the last thing on her mind.

However, this wasn’t a possibility during her stint in the controversial 2017 release, Mother, as she was dating its director Darren Aronofsky at the time.

Jennifer Lawrence Didn’t Enjoy Discussing Mother With Darren Aronofsky

Jennifer Lawrence‘s experience in Mother wasn’t exactly pretty. Considering she was completely immersed in the role, at one point, Lawrence was too emotionally overwhelmed, and even tore her diaphragm and dislocated a rib as a result of hyperventilating. On top of that, her relationship with director Darren Aronofsky at the time, did little to ameliorate things, as she would find herself discussing the film with the director after moving back to the hotel.

She explained:

We’d be on the tour together, I’d come back to the hotel and the last thing I want to talk about or think about is the movie, but he comes back and that’s all he wants to talk about.

While she understood why it was the case, stressing “I get it. It’s his baby. He wrote it. He conceived it. He directed it”, the actress felt like she was on double duty.

I was doing double duty of trying to be a supportive partner while also being like ‘Can I please, for the love of God, not think about ‘Mother!’ for one second?’

Two months after Mother hit the screens, whose negative reviews broke Lawrence’s heart, the two eventually parted ways.

While The Hunger Games star gave it all for the psychological horror, like many fans, even she couldn’t grasp the entirety of the film. Lawrence further joked that despite having access to Aronofsky’s cliff notes as “she was sleeping with the director”, the actress could only understand half of the film. Appearing on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen (via People), she said:

I’m going to be honest. Well, I was sleeping with the director, so I had the CliffNotes. So, five. Or four?

Even though it remains one of Lawrence’s most polarizing films to date, which only grossed $44.5 million throughout its box-office run, the Oscar winner’s commitment to the project can’t be overlooked.

Mother is available to rent on Apple TV as of 18 August 2024.
