There are many perspectives through which you can understand and admire Elden Ring. Cryptic storytelling, weird characters, in-depth lore, the list goes on. But, a unique take would be to take a glance at the game through its mystifying, beautiful, and somewhat nonsensical songwriting.

A year ago, a Redditor revealed their background in Latin and how contacting the makers of Elden Ring became a creative process of writing songs that didn’t just sound absurd but also fit into the game’s world almost perfectly.

If the music in Elden Ring doesn’t make sense to you, there’s a reason why

Elden Ring
Epic and gibberish; the game’s soundtrack fits perfectly with the overall theme.

In a post shared by MAGISTER-ORGANI on Reddit, readers got a deeper insight into the connection between Elden Ring’s soundtrack and Hidetaka Miyazaki’s storytelling process.

The user wrote about their experience with Latin as a language being used by the creators, and how it started connecting to the game’s world:

Most of the lyrics are just computer-generated syllables sung by a Hungarian choir ,very few were written, like the song of the bats and originally the final battle song lyrics !

The music producer who wrote the lyrics of Radagon and the Elden Beast told me From Soft ordered him to turn the correct Latin lyrics into gibberish and so the producer turned them into gibberish…

The gibberish nature of the soundtrack in the game links directly to how Miyazaki wanted players to experience the rich world of Elden Ring. The post’s author also included a video that explores the lyrics. Even though the tracks sound epic and fit the theme, much of it is beyond our comprehension, and all of it seems to be an intentional decision.

At first, it may be easy to judge the book by its cover and call it ‘flawed design’, but when you explore Miyazaki’s history with how he acquired knowledge and chose to pursue a creative path riddled with mystery, it all starts making sense.

Miyazaki’s limited knowledge became a strength for him as a game designer

Elden Ring cryptic
Elden Ring’s world may be incredibly cryptic, but that’s part of its charm.

Based on the post, Hidetaka Miyazaki’s childhood wasn’t a transparent one where things made sense. As a young boy, he would read books beyond his comprehension and eventually connect the dots thanks to his imagination. Fields of different natures and curiosity were part of his childhood as well as teenage years. He once was a student of social sciences and eventually ended up working as an accountant.

Try being in a creative genius’s mind who never lost his way with imagination despite living all these different kinds of lives. Such kind of experiences eventually drove him to create game mechanics that reflected his curiosity. The world-building in games like Elden Ring is pretty much evidence of half-written knowledge that becomes whole the more you explore it.

Even though his initial ideas felt like a failure to FromSoftware, the different set pieces of several worlds in Dark Souls games made their way into the hearts of millions, celebrating enigmatic stories rather than belittling them. And that’s the very reason Elden Ring’s soundtrack doesn’t feel incomplete or half-done in any way. Even though much of the philosophy behind it was pretty much that.

Miyazaki may have capitalized on his half-learned knowledge of art and history, but it’s clear to fans that these games are nothing short of complete experiences. Have you felt this sense of belongingness in these games despite them being shrouded in mystery? Let us know in the comments below.
