Unless you have been living under a rock for some time now, you are well aware of a piece of good news Marvel fans heard at the end of September 2022. Hugh Jackman, despite retiring from the character, is once again all set to reprise his role as Wolverine in Deadpool 3. We wonder what was going on in Taron Egerton’s mind when he heard this.

Why? Well, Taron Egerton had once shown interest in playing Wolverine and even had a meeting with Kevin Feige about becoming a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But this was last year, and it looks like things have taken a turn in 2023. Taron Egerton is no longer looking to be a part of the superhero universe, whether it is as Wolverine or as another character he once wanted to play as he believes the ship has sailed!

Ever since Taron Egerton revealed that he was interested in playing Wolverine, the actor has been among the top fan casts for the character. Back in February 2022, Egerton revealed to The New York Times that he had a meeting with the President of the Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, about becoming a part of the ever-growing ensemble of MCU.

Adding to that, he also said that while he would like to play Wolverine, he would be a bit “apprehensive” because Hugh Jackman has been linked to the role for a long time and those were tough shoes to fill. However, he added that if the chance ever comes up, the Studios will give him a call. Well, that didn’t happen as Jackman is back in the picture! And now, Egerton believes the ship has long sailed.

In the March 2023, issue of Total Film, Egerton was asked about the role which he had a meeting with Feige for. While the Rocketman actor didn’t reveal the exact character, he did say that he was too old to play it now despite there being an opening for it. he also talked about Wolverine and added that being a part of the MCU might not be on his to-do list anymore.

“Well, the one that I mentioned is up for grabs, but I’m too old for it now. I think that ship has probably sailed. Yeah, that whole Wolverine thing – I get asked about it and no matter what you say, it gets turned into what people want you to say about it. I’m not going to be the guy to play Wolverine. There’s no signs pointing towards that being the thing. And I just don’t know if I’m maybe… I don’t know. Maybe I’m getting to the point where that’s not what I want any more. I don’t know.”

Egerton continued to praise the MCU films and stated that he has been enjoying them as a fan for about 15 years now. Unfortunately, though, he doesn’t believe the superhero universe is the step in the right direction for him anymore.

“I’d never say never, and I do love those movies. I’ve really enjoyed watching them over the past 10, 15 years. But whether I… You know, it may not be that they’re the right thing for me any more. I think maybe I’m past the point where that felt like the right thing [for my career].”

Well, that’s a disappointing revelation for fans that would have liked to somehow someday see him in the expansive universe. But just like he said, never say never, right?

In early 2022, Egerton appeared for an interview on The One Show where once again, Wolverine and the MCU became a topic of discussion. He was asked if the rumors about him playing Wolverine were true, which he denied stating that there was “no truth to it at all,” but added that it would be “really exciting.” The Kingsman actor later stated that he would love to be a part of the MCU and compared the superhero universe to the James Bond franchise thanks to both of them having a humongous audience.

“Yeah of course. That’s like playing Bond. It would be exciting to play a role where you play to by such a huge audience. Those movies are the most watched movies in the world. It’s a great thrill and it’s a great part. But there’s no truth in it. Very flattering, though.”

We wonder what changed in just a year. Does the current slump the MCU is in right now have something to do with Egerton’s change of heart? It’s quite possible!
