Amidst the raging battle between good CGI and bad CGI, veteran actor Michael Keaton is all set to release his upcoming film called Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (also called Beetlejuice 2).
The first film was released in 1988 with the iconic Tim Burton sitting at the helm of the project in his director’s chair. A sequel, almost 36 years later after the original film, is on the verge of release and fans are excited.
Michael Keaton Wanted One Thing Desperately For Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Ever since technology has evolved, a focus on CGI, VFX, and, animation has increased greatly over the years. With billion-dollar franchises like the MCU and the DCU relying heavily on these effects, the world sure loves CGI stuff and cool fighting scenes.
However, there have been some instances when CGI has ruined movies for people (looking at you Thor: Love and Thunder). Between the raging battle of CGI and VFX, Michael Keaton emerged with a new idea.
In an interview with GQ, the Birdman actor revealed that they did not use much CGI or animation in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The actor revealed that almost all of the things seen in the film were handmade… including the sets!
When I say handmade, it’s literally handmade. That’s really hard to do in 2024.
He further revealed the reason why they chose not to go down the CGI path.
For the most part, [with CGI] I think a lot of audiences subconsciously feel farther away from what’s actually going on on the screen or in the story. It’ll work, they’ll accept it. But I think for a lot of movies, it’s not quite as enjoyable.
Well, it does seem that the film is going to be terribly amazing since Keaton wanted to preserve the original handmade feeling of the sets from the first film.
As the interview further continued, the interviewer talked about veteran director Tim Burton who talked about Michael Keaton. Unsurprisingly, Burton was quite fascinated to see Keaton after so many years.
Tim Burton Was Quite Frightened of Michael Keaton!
Back in 1988 when Beetlejuice was released, Tim Burton was just a 29-year-old director who didn’t have a great level of fame to his name. After 36 years, Burton is quite the name in Hollywood.
Reuniting for the sequel felt like a family reunion for Burton. The interviewer stated to Keaton that Tim Burton talked about the reunion for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and how Michael Keaton was one terrific actor.
It was like a weird family reunion. Very strange, but the strange part of it is, Michael got back so into it, it was kind of scary in a way. I mean, for somebody who didn’t really maybe want to do it, he seemed to channel it very quickly. And so it was quite exciting and surreal.
After its release, Beetlejuice received a rating of 7.5/10 on IMDB and a whopping 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. The iconic film was loved and adored by millions around the world.
With a sequel on the way, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is set for a release date of 6 September 2024 in theaters across the U.S. On the other hand, the 1988 film is available to stream on Max in the U.S.
