Akira Toriyama, one of the most legendary and influential mangaka artists and the creator of the popular series Dragon Ball, recently passed away on March 1, 2024. The sudden demise of the legendary figure had sent the world into a sea of sorrows, as almost every fan, director, voice actor, and production studio has voiced their love and appreciation for Toriyama.
The departure of the Dragon Ball creator was in fact a shock as none would have even imagined in their wildest dreams that Toriyama-Sensei had been sick or was secretly suffering from any disease. However, Akira Toriyama’s assistant revealed the real cause of his death as fans continue to mourn a man who made their childhoods memorable.
Akira Toriyama’s Assistant Reveals The Upsetting Revelation About His Death
Akira Toriyama never shared much of his personal life, thus it was a shocker to fans who had been eagerly waiting for the mangaka artist to give updates on the much-anticipated upcoming series Dragon Ball DAIMA. To the surprise of many, Toriyama-Sensei had continued to invest in his work, and gifted fans what was a result of his utmost perfection and dedication, which now happens to be his parting gift.
The official account of Dragon Ball shared the devastating news of how their creator passed away on March 1, 2024, from an acute subdural hematoma. But what’s surprising is that he had talked about his deteriorating health when it was announced that he had earned the Tokyo Anime Award Festival 2024’s Lifetime Achievement Award via SUPER クロニクルス (@SupaChronicles) on X. He said,
“Finally, I would like to thank everyone who has supported me so far! I am not sure how much more I can do, as I am not very confident about my health, probably due to my lifestyle when I was younger, but I will try my best to create more interesting pieces of work, so please continue to support me!”
However, Takashi Matsuyama, Akira Toriyama’s assistant for many years, shared a piece of vital information regarding the mangaka artist’s death with Chunichi Shimbun via SaiyaJedi. He said,
“At that time, Toriyama told him that he would be undergoing surgery for a brain tumor in the new year. He was nonchalant about it, but Matsuyama recalls him struggling with quitting smoking.”
The news was later shared by Dexerto (@Dexerto) on X, where fans reacted to it, and offered their condolences to the late mangaka artist.
Tbh It is a great loss to the entertainment industry. Akira Toriyama's legacy will forever live on through his iconic creations like Dragon Ball. May he rest in peace.

Akira Toriyama is considered one of the first artists who made anime popular in the Western hemisphere, especially before the social media age. Moreover, his Dragon Ball series including the spin-offs like Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, and many more are immensely popular among fans and they still watch them with the same joy as if they’re watching it for the very first time.
Akira Toriyama Had Been Suffering For a Lengthy Span of Time
As the manga creator had earlier mentioned he is not feeling too confident about his health, he has been suffering for a protracted time as he died from an acute subdural hematoma. Recently, Dr. Mahdi, a medical official, explained the cause of Akira Toriyam’s death on his YouTube channel by breaking down the term in simple words and giving an explanation, stating it can commonly occur due to “a head injury like from a fall or being involved in a car accident.”
However, he did mention that there are a number of factors that are taken into consideration. He mentioned how there’s a “chronic form of these hematomas often occur in the elderly and can be triggered as a bump in the head.” He said,
“Chronic hematomas tend to develop more slowly with more subtle symptoms and tend to be cause by more minor head injuries.”
The information given by Dr. Mahdi explains how Toriyama-Sensei had been suffering for a long time. Nevertheless, during the time of his departure, he died as the third richest mangaka artist with a net worth of $50 million.
Dragon Ball DAIMA is set to release sometime in 2024.
