The Gears of War series is going to have a major comeback next year with the upcoming release of Gears of War E-Day. The creative director of the game promises to take the franchise back to its roots, focusing on what made the original games great.
This direction is partly in response to the reception of Gears of War 5, which some fans felt strayed too far from the series’ core elements.

The creative director, Matt Searcy, speaking at the Xbox Games Showcase 2024, emphasized that E-Day will return to the core of the franchise by reigniting the intense, gritty atmosphere and tight-knit squad dynamics and interactions that defined the early games. The decision to pivot back to these foundational aspects came from a desire to recapture the raw, brutal, and visceral experience that initially drew players to the series.
Searcy shared:
We realized that a lot of the words we use to describe the franchise were what our fans also use, phrases like brotherhood, brutality, pathos, awe. Why E-Day? That’s the moment it all comes together. It’s the heart of the Gears universe. Everything that happens is shaped by this day.
Gears of War 5 was ambitious, introducing new elements and expanding the game’s universe. However, it was met with a mix of praise and criticism. While some appreciated the innovation, others felt it lost the essence of what made Gears of War special.
The game’s open-world sections, while a fresh addition, didn’t resonate with everyone. They sometimes disrupted the pace, making the experience feel disjointed. A lot of fans didn’t care as much about Kate as they did with JD, and wanted to see more of him instead.
Going back to the Heart and Soul of the Series

The creative team behind E-Day has taken previous feedback to heart. They’ve conducted extensive player feedback sessions and analyzed what worked and what didn’t in Gears 5. Their surveys led to a renewed focus on the original linear storytelling, intense combat scenarios, and character-driven narratives similar to the original trilogy.
Searcy emphasizes a focus on claustrophobic environments, intense close-quarters combat, and the signature over-the-shoulder perspective that Gears is known for. While E-Day honors the franchise’s legacy, it’s not simply a retread or retelling of it. He emphasizes the presence of new mechanics and storylines that will keep the experience feeling fresh and brand new.
One of the standout features of the original Gears of War games was the chainsaw bayonet. Its brutal, close-quarters combat became an iconic aspect of the series. Gears of War E-Day aims to bring back these signature elements since it’s an origin story for all of these things.
The upcoming Gears of War E-Day is shaping up to be a significant step forward, while going backwards in time, for the franchise. By returning to its roots and focusing on what made the series a beloved classic, the developers are sure to deliver a game that both long-time fans and new players will enjoy.
