Christopher Nolan’s film Oppenheimer is a biopic of Manhattan Project physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who is also known as the father of the atomic bomb. The film, through the life story of the lead physicist, tells the story of the atom bomb explosion of World War II.

The involvement of nudity and intimate scenes has raised many questions. Recently, during a conversation with GQ, Murphy acknowledged all the questions related to the s*x scene in the film. In the interview, the actor was asked about his opinion on the requirement of intimate scenes in the film. Murphy responded by defending the scene in the film and claiming,

“I think they were vital in this in this movie. I think the relationship that he has with [Pugh’s character] Jean Tatlock is one of the most crucial emotional parts of the film. I think if they’re key to the story then they’re worthwhile.”

Further, the actor emphasized his experience filming the scene. He said,

“Any time you’re challenging yourself to work in areas you haven’t worked in before, you should be appropriately nervous and appropriately careful and planned and prepared.”

The filmmaker further explained that after keenly scrutinizing Oppehimer’s life and considering some crucial elements like his s*xuality, his way with women, and the charm that he exuded, he felt the need for the scene in the film, and hence he included it.

This isn’t the first time Nolan and Murphy have collaborated, as they have worked together in movies like the Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Tenet, Dunkirk, and Interstellar. Although Oppenheimer is the first film directed by Nolan to include s*x scenes,

S*x scenes in Oppenheimer have not just given the film an R rating, but the film has also been condemned in India. Indian officials have called out the film for attacking their religion. The Indian journalist Uday Mahurkar wrote a lengthy Twitter post and expressed his feelings towards Nolan’s film. He wrote,

“It has come to our notice that the movie Oppenheimer contains a scene which make a scathing attack on Hinduism. As per social media reports, a scene in the movie shows a woman makes a man read Bhagwad Geeta aloud while getting over him and doing s*xual intercourse. She is holding Bhagwad Geeta in one hand, and the other hands seems to be adjusting the position of their reproductive organs.”

The journalist has criticized the film and claimed that the indulgence of such a scene is unnecessary in the film. Despite facing harsh criticism from Hindu nationalist groups, it has been reported by CNN that the film is doing well at the Indian Box office.
