Ever since the announcement of Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom, fans must be wondering which characters will make it to the highly anticipated film. Avengers installments most likely see an assemblage of comic book figures from different franchises, which is why it is such a big deal.

It still feels weird to see the Oscar-winning actor play a different character this time, not to mention a villain, after his decade-long service as Iron Man. Nonetheless, the audience expects an equally stellar performance from Downey Jr.

The list includes “Deadpool, Wolverine, The Spider-Men, The Fantastic Four, The Thunderbolts, The Young Avengers, Doctor Strange, Clea, Hulk, She-Hulk, Shang-Chi, Black Panther (Shuri), Sam Wilson’s Captain America, Captain Marvel, Monica, Moon Knight, Daredevil, Hawkeye, Star-Lord, Loki, Thor, White Vision, Wanda, Agatha, Ant-Man, War Machine, and Pepper Potts.”

The last two names definitely bring back nostalgia as they were the ones viewers first met at the beginning of the MCU saga. Petter Potts was played by Gwyneth Paltrow in Iron Man, and James Rhodes, also known as War Machine – later Iron Patriot, was portrayed by Don Cheadle.

If these two characters ever had interactions with Doctor Doom, it would absolutely look strange given that the antagonist is played by the same actor who portrayed Tony Stark, a figure beloved to both Potts and Rhodes.

It’s also intriguing what part these two characters would play in Doomsday. As Paltrow said in one of her Instagram stories: “We just stopped doing it because Iron Man died. And, why do you need Pepper Potts without Iron Man?

Regarding her return to acting, Paltrow told ET Online that she would perhaps be enticed to appear in the MCU again with a little encouragement from her Iron Man costar. “Well, it would be very hard for me to do any acting right at the moment, just because of my job,” she explained before igniting fans’ hope: “But, I guess Robert Downey Jr. could probably always get me back.”

Meanwhile, Cheadle is confirmed to star in the upcoming MCU project, Armor Wars, which is currently in its early development. He once told ComicBook about playing War Machine: “I’d really want to dig into him and maybe even find something that felt closer to the first Iron Man for who he was.”
