The Amazing Spider-Man 4: Sony Reportedly Wanted Andrew Garfield to Fight Emma Stone as Carnage

It is not as crazy as it sounds, but one concept Sony explored for Amazing Spider-Man 4 was having Gwen Stacy as Carnage.

SUMMARY

  • So far, Marvel has introduced Peter Parker as Spider-Man in three different iterations: Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland.
  • Out of these three, only Garfield’s version wasn’t allowed with a third movie beyond the first two. Though his Spider-Man returned in the MCU’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, it wasn’t a definitive conclusion to his story.

While it has been known for some time that Garfield’s Spider-Man was also destined for a trilogy, recent revelations have shed more light on plans beyond the reported trilogy. The actor’s portrayal of Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) took a slightly gritty and brighter approach to the beloved web-slinger. However, the tantalizing conflict between Emma Stone’s Carnage and Garfield’s Spider-Man in the fourth installment’s rumored plot really got people talking. Well, the story may have been written with Stone’s return as Carnage in mind, as reported by Sony Pictures producers.

The Amazing Spider-Man 4: Emma Stone Almost Returned As Carnage?

Despite the ups and downs of The Amazing Spider-Man films, fans were won over by the charm and wit of Andrew Garfield‘s portrayal of the wall-crawler. Plot-wise, The Amazing Spider-Man 4 would be highly speculative, as the Hacksaw Ridge actor was only signed to a three-picture deal, and Marc Webb was only expected to consult on the film after the third.

Denis Leary, who portrayed Captain George Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man, revealed in an IGN interview that plans for the third film included Peter learning how to raise the dead. This information could indicate that the plot was prearranged, especially when combined with an alleged email leak from Sony Pictures’ producers wanting Emma Stone to mark her return as Carnage. Though it seems to be a ridiculous plot, Spider-Man in comic books is known for unexpected turns, so perhaps it was real.

The live-action Spider-Man deal between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios changed everything. Ultimately, despite being too similar to the era of The Amazing Spider-Man, Tom Holland’s reboot was successful in casting a teenager as Parker and integrating him into the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Still, the idea was elevated to a whole new level by the rumored plan for the fourth The Amazing Spider-Man film, which was to make Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy—a resurrected Carnage—against Garfield’s Spider-Man.

The Implications of Gwen Stacy as Carnage for Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man?

In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man underwent a significant transformation following Gwen Stacy’s death. In both Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it is shown that after Peter Parker almost gave up being a superhero due to grief, he eventually grew resentful and even used his full strength against his adversaries (with tragic results). Since Gwen and Peter had a significant role in the first two movies, her return—even as a villain—would be a huge step.

Screenrant claims that Gwen’s return as Carnage could be a means of putting an end to Peter Parker’s feelings for her. It could set up a situation in which she is unable to change into the Gwen he knew and instead poses a threat to innocent people, compelling him to kill her. This would provide cruel, heartbreaking, and real closure to his relationship with Gwen.

According to THR, Sony earlier announced the release dates for its third and fourth The Amazing Spider-Man movies for May 4, 2018, and June 10, 2016, respectively, in theaters.

We can’t help but marvel at the incredible idea of the story of these planned films, even though it hasn’t been released on the big screen.
