This article on the original Netflix series The Brothers Sun Season 1 Episode 1, “Pilot,” contains spoilers.
Brad Falchuk’s The Brothers Sun pilot starts with a bang. The series is funny and action-packed, with the perfect tone set by star Justin Chien. He plays Charles Sun, the enforcer of the Triads in Taiwan. Charles also loves to bake, as he is cooking perfect cakes before some highly trained assassins show up to kill him.
Charles kills all three, but his father, the head of the Triads, comes out of hiding to tell him he should have kept one alive. They both agree the attackers are probably from their rival faction, “Sleepy Chan.” That’s when a bullet comes through the window, striking Charles’s father in the stomach.
Ba tells his son to find and protect his mother. The thing is, Charles has not seen his “Mama” since he was a teenager. She left to go to America to give Charles’s little brother, Bruce, a chance at a normal life. He then heads off to make sure she is not in danger.
Netflix’s The Brothers Sun Season 1 Episode1 Recap: Who is Bruce Sun?
Bruce Sun (Sam Song Li) is a college student taking premed courses. His mother, Eileen (Michelle Yeoh), wants him to be a doctor. Her son has never been told about his family history. You know, the kind where he comes from murderous Triad gangsters who have more money than God? Eileen has Bruce thinking they are struggling for money, and she’s scraping just enough to get by in life.
However, Bruce uses his tuition money to take “improv” classes at the local Groundlings in Los Angeles. He never told his mom. Now, the school is telling him he may be kicked out if he doesn’t catch up on back payments. Bruce has a gifted mind and a great memory. He even finishes tests nearly an hour early, even if it means a point deduction, saying “B” still gets degrees.
Bruce is immature and babied by his mother. He doesn’t have the heart to tell her he spent the money. So he asks his best friend, TK, for a job selling “weed” on the side to pay for college. He is taken to a club, where he meets his brother for the first time in years.
Who is Charles Sun?
Charles Sun (Justin Chien) is the son of the head of the infamous Jade Dragons and is poised to become his successor. After years away, he flies to the States to reunite with his mother, whom he hasn’t seen in ages. Upon arriving at her house, he’s ambushed by a masked assassin. In self-defense, Charles is compelled to kill the assailant before uncovering who sent him. It’s at this moment that Eileen enters the scene, discovering a lifeless body sprawled on the floor.
Instead of welcoming him home, she criticizes him for not cleaning up. Eventually, she warms up to him by telling him to clean a bloody knife so she can cook him dinner. She explains how she kept Bruce hidden from their “world.” Charles leaves, looking for some local muscle to help protect his mother and brother. He goes to the same club where Bruce is selling drugs.
The Brothers Sun Season 1 Episode 1 Ending Explained: Who Attacks the Club looking for Charles?
We don’t know who attacks the club looking for Charles. What we do know is, The Brothers Sun’s pilot ends with Bruce saving his brother’s life. They run into each other, with Charles recognizing Bruce immediately and explaining to him who he is.
However, Bruce’s new boss, May, does not like taking orders. May and her gangsters attack Charles, but four bikers blow up the wall outside of her office. They armed assassins and headed into the club, killing May and others while looking for Charles. Bruce helps his brother escape in TK’s car.
