This article on the original Netflix series The Brothers Sun Season 1 Episode 3, “Whatever You Want,” contains spoilers.
Brad Falchuk’s series has trouble balancing its dark humor with its overall tone, which is so uneven that it can range from ultra-cool to super weird. The episode titled “Whatever You Want” helps calm the waters. Mostly, by giving the main character some well-rounded appeal by showing his softer side. However, he does boil that assassin’s head so he can break up the skull.
Also, right after he attempts to perfect his deep friend churro recipe, So, yeah, trust me, in the following scenes, he does find a well-rounded arc with Alexis, his long-lost “past lives” love. Alexis invites Charles out for a bite by texting him. (Her texts have a “dame” quality about them as if they were ripped from some 1950s cinema.)
We learn that Charles was once called “Little Fatty” because he was overweight. He also can’t handle the heat, even though he proudly proclaims he’s from Taiwan. I thought there was considerable heat between them. Alexis offers him a deal to help him and his family. Charles refuses, and then leaves after receiving a call from his mom, Eileen.
Netflix’s The Brothers Sun Season 1 Episode 3 Recap: Who is June in The Brothers Sun?
June is the ominous woman who stalked Bruce ( Sam Song Li) on campus at the end of the last episode, “Favor for a Favor.” We never saw June touch or abduct Bruce, but now we find out she did. She also took TK. When the scene begins, she is torturing TK with a vice grip on his thumbs. She also has Bruce tied up to a chair and he finds out his best friend gave him up rather quickly.
We then learn a bit of June’s backstory. For instance, why on earth is June so mad at Bruce? Well, as it turns out, June’s twin sister was May. (Actress Alice Hewkin, per IMDB, plays both parts.) Yes, TK’s boss and drug dealer are at the club. She was killed by the masked biker gang that has still not been identified.
How do Charles and Eileen locate Bruce?
After running into Grace at school, Charles (Justin Chien) and Eileen (Michelle Yeoh) learn that June’s drug supplies, Tony Tang, import them by using his seafood restaurant as cover. (They learn this by Eileen insisting they play mahjong to hear important gossip.) The new mother-and-son team heads over to ask Tang some questions. Eileen sends Charles to the back.
From there, Charles runs into a couple of Tang’s goons. In a scene that’s meant to add some levity, Eileen watches the security cameras while manipulating the owner by distracting him. She leaves, also with a free lobster meal on the house, and Charles can “sweet talk” Tang’s drug mules into the warehouse address in White Craones where Bruce is being kept.
The Brothers Sun Season 1 Episode 3 Ending Explained: What does the tattoo say?
The Brothers Sun episode’s final scene ends with Alexis (Highdee Kuan) at Tony Tang’s restaurant. The owner has been killed, impaled, and had his feet and hands cut off, then put in a box. Alexias asks an officer to bag them up. When he turns around, it’s the same man who walked in on Elieen. He has a tattoo on his arm that reads, “The Riddance of Evil Must Be Thorough.”
At least, that’s what the Netflix translation read on my screener.
Finally, the red ribbons seem to have a connection to the adversaries facing the Jade Dragon family. At the beginning of the episode, Eileen visits an abandoned apartment and finds a red ribbon. A menacing man walked in. Right before he approaches her, Eileen pretends to be a woman in need of help, and the man runs away.
