History stands as testimony that live-action remakes have little to no chance of surviving the critic clout. However, when coupled with a popular social sentiment with a dash of social message, live-action can hit through the roof. And so happened with the recently released Disney’s The Little Mermaid.
As per the fans of Disney, the movie devoid of all original emotions, seems to be mediocre and vanilla. The non-existent CGI and hyper-realism miserably fail to uphold the legacy of the original Little Mermaid. Despite the many reviews applauding the remake, there is an equal number of people ridiculing it.
Disney’s The Little Mermaid: A Cinematic Failure
Disney is not just a name but an emotion. People who grew up watching Disney movies remember the horror we felt when we first heard of the live-action remakes of our beloved Disney movies. With movie after movie failing to deliver on the legacy of the originals, there wasn’t much expected by Disney-buffs when the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid was announced. Despite Halle Bailey‘s performance and magical chemistry with Jonah Hauer-King, the film fails horribly when it comes to CGI. With fans claiming ‘all magic is lost’, here are some tweets explaining how much of a cinematic disaster the movie was.

Everything that could have gone horrid with this film, went this way except the one horrid element, Ursula. Melissa McCarthy’s not-at-all-eerie performance only looked comical, straight out of some bad parody of The Little Mermaid. The hyper-realism of Flounder, Sebastian, and other characters is totally devoid of Original’s heartful and soulful emotions that Disney fans so dearly loved. This coupled with the nowhere to be seen CGI effects on the surroundings and ‘ocean’ only further testify that this version is just a bad nightmare that all Disney fans wish to escape from.
Disney Is Not The Disney We Used To Know?
Each millennial and Gen Z kid would remember the magic of Disney classics that we all grew up with. From the magical tale of Beauty and The Beast to the tragic story of The Lion Game, Disney classics have been a source of comfort and a means to relax. But it seems the magic of Disney that most of us remember has died. Disney seems to have gone out of ideas and adopted the policy of reselling the old with vibrant new packaging without the magical elements of the original. The live-action remake of The Little Mermaid is a testimony to this fact.
While the decision to cast Halle Bailey seems like Disney attempting to partake in “the equal representation and opportunity” movement, the movie leaves a bitter taste among the many Disney fans.
