Netflix is currently looking at two of its biggest IPs coming to a close. With Umbrella Academy ending this year, and Stranger Things heading toward its final season, the streaming service seems to be on the lookout for new IPs to capitalize on. Apart from Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon, Netflix seems to be focusing on making other sci-fi IPs happen.

A new trailer for Netflix’s science fiction film Atlas was released, and people cannot help but compare the film with Titanfall, a series of first-person shooter games that were developed for Microsoft Windows and Xbox. The game had a similar concept of piloting mechs as depicted in Atlas, where the mechs look eerily similar to how they are depicted in the IP.

Atlas seems to be a hardcore action film that focuses on the relationship between human beings and AI, which might not be a film you would expect Jennifer Lopez to be a part of. While fans discuss how the film looks and feels like Titanfall, a slew of criticisms have been leveled towards Lopez’s existence in the film, which feels morbidly out of place. While there is no doubt about the actress’s acting chops, Atlas just seems like a film that is not suited for the niche that she has carved out for herself in Hollywood.

The film also stars the likes of Simu Liu and Sterling K. Brown, and is scheduled to release on May 24th, 2024. The trailer for the film comes fresh off the heels of Rebel Moon- Part 2: The Scargiver, which was just released on the streaming service. It seems that Netflix is keen on building a library of original science fiction IPs, allowing directors to experiment with the genre and its subsets while delivering mid-budget thrillers that can attract audiences in the short run to the service.

Titanfall is a first-person shooter game that has players pilot mechsuits into battle. This is something that the film also emulates, with the mechs looking pretty similar to that of the game, and seeming to serve a similar function as well. Fans have taken to the internet to talk about the similarities, and how the film looks like a discount version of the video game.

Fans are also not thrilled about the idea of seeing Jennifer Lopez in the film, which looks like it has a cookie-cutter plot and no interesting characterization for fans to get hooked. Not to mention the fact of how out of place the actress looks in the film. However, judgment for the film will need to be reserved till it comes out.
