The Day Before was pretty much a disaster in the making ever since the developers promised all the game could be. Even with all the skepticism, players fell victim to the hype and gave it a shot. Only to end up wanting to delete the game and never look back. The prophecy came true; the game is nowhere to be found now, but there’s a parody of the game that might be worth your attention.
A solo developer has been working hard on re-enacting everything The Day Before could, should, and would have been. Everything from the movement and characters to the game’s atmosphere feels alive. This looks impressive, given that only one person is in charge of the project at the moment.
The Day Before Fell, So Crimson’s Project Could Walk
The developer, who goes by the name Crimson, recently showed the world a glimpse of this newfound project. Ideally, the game is a work-in-progress that seems to be everything The Day Before wasn’t. The gunplay looks great, the movement animations are smooth, and the atmosphere feels right at home.
The dynamic weather and lighting are what make the project feel like a breath of fresh air. Compared to the disaster The Day Before was, this parody aims at fixing everything the game couldn’t be.
In fact, even the zombies in large hordes already look better than what players had to go through earlier. To put the project’s vision into words, Crimson stated:
I’ve had tons of fun with this project and I’ve always wanted to dabble in the survival genre, I believe after my current game (Suit for Hire), I’ll be working on a co-op zombie survival game, I hope you look forward to it as much as I am!
While the project still has a long way to go, the vision feels clear, and maybe, just maybe, players will finally have a genuinely exciting co-op survival game to look forward to. Of course, the genre may be oversaturated at this point, but there’s always room for new ideas in the gaming community.
The Failure of The Day Before May Inspire Other Developers Too
For every failed project in history, there’s a developer who’s ready to work their magic and bring out a project that people actually want to play. A prime example of this was Stardew Valley. Inspired by games like Harvest Moon, developer Eric Barone took it upon himself to create a game that would live up to the expectations of a spiritual successor.
Even though Harvest Moon wasn’t necessarily a failure, the franchise was starting to grow cold and drive away its usual player base.
A recent story also belongs to Palworld, which may be inspired by the Pokémon games but seems to be pleasing fans who have eagerly waited for a new open-world game inspired by the franchise’s roots. Palworld puts a spin on things by having its own unique gameplay loop, and that’s an idea that has been cherished by the community.
We’re likely to find many such stories, and the biggest takeaway here is how one game’s failure turns into an inspiration for developers to hone their potential at its finest.
Crimson fits this narrative very well, and it’s exciting to see how the developer unfolds their journey building on the fundamentals of a post-apocalyptic survival game. What do you think of the parody project ‘The Day After?’ Let us know in the comments below.
