The DC Movie Kevin Feige Makes Everyone Watch Before Every MCU Film: “We watch it before we make any of our films”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has continued to bring new stories and superheroes to keep the audiences engaged. But, before the curation of any movie in the superhero genre, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige admitted to watching a movie from its rival studio, Superman: The Movie (1978). It is quite surprising since both studios have continued to face intense competition due to their similar content.

However, that DC movie has left a great impression on Feige let alone the superhero genre which is what he glimpsed when he revealed about it.

Back in 1978, Richard Donner’s Superman: The Movie hit the theatres only to launch the modern era of superhero blockbusters. That DC movie unexpectedly became a great connection between its competitor, Marvel Studios as Kevin Feige considers it in high regard. 

In the book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, he commented on the movie setting a great example in the superhero genre.

“Superman: The Movie is still to this day the archetype of the perfect superhero film origin story.”

He further commented on how he makes sure to give it a watch before making any new movie in the Marvel franchise.

“We watch it before we make any one of our films.”

He mentioned that he continued to follow the same pattern for many years now.  

“That’s been the case for the past seventeen years since I left the fold to go work for Marvel.”

Starring Christopher Reeve in the titular role, the 1978 movie tells the origin story of The Last Son of Krypton which is far gone unmatched. Kal-El is sent from the planet Krypton to Earth and is raised as Clark Kent in Smallville, Kansas. As he grows up, he discovers his superhuman abilities which he uses for the benefit of humanity. It is a classic movie that has an enduring impact as it successfully brought the story of Superman to life.

There are several reasons why Donner’s 1978 film gained a cult following even years later. While the concept on its own made it unique, Reeve’s portrayal of Clark Kent aka Superman adds another flavor to the superhero flick.

His compelling on-screen performance and the complexity of his role made him one of the fan-favorite superheroes. Other than him, the ensemble cast further amplified the overall essence of the movie which included actors like Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Jeff East, and Sarah Douglas among several others.

The movie had a whooping production budget of $55 million featuring intense action sequences, impressive sets, and incredible storytelling that eventually worked out to make the movie quite successful.

After the release, it was a critical and financial success grossing $300 million worldwide. It reignited audiences’ interest in the comic character which continues even to this day.
