James Gunn, with Peter Safran, is trying to resurrect a franchise everyone has written off. He has announced a new slate full of exciting DCU projects like Superman: Legacy and The Brave and The Bold. However, DC fans are not happy. They are angered by Gunn’s decisions because he let go of Henry Cavill as the man of steel. But that’s not all. After reports of Ben Affleck directing a DCU film were shot down, fans have reached their boiling point. They are now calling the new DC Studios’ co-CEO a liar. But Gunn has invalidated all such allegations in an explosive Twitter rant.

During the new DCU slate announcement, James Gunn confirmed that Justice League star, Ben Affleck wasn’t returning as Batman in the new DC universe. But he said that the Argo director was interested in directing a film. Previously, Gunn had stated in a Twitter post that he wanted Affleck to direct as well, and both were waiting for the right project. Since then, there were rumors that the acclaimed actor was going to direct DCU’s Batman movie, The Brave and The Bold. But that has been refuted by Gunn himself.

As per SlashFilm, the new DC Studios’ co-CEO is interested in having a working relationship with Affleck. But it isn’t going to be through The Brave and The Bold. As per Gunn:

“We’re working with Ben Affleck, who really wants to be [and] has been a part of our architectural team trying to bring things together, and he really wants to direct one of our projects. We’re excited for him doing that. But this is the story of Damian Wayne, who is Batman’s actual son, who he didn’t know existed for the first eight to 10 years of his life.”

There are plenty of other films, The Town director can helm. But DC fans are pissed that Affleck, who at one time was rumored to direct a Batman film before Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson’s version came on screen, has been denied the opportunity to do so again. But Gunn doesn’t think that he has misled DC fans in any way. In a Twitter thread, he said:

“For years it’s been my commitment to the fans that I will never lie to them… and I never have. I’d be very curious about what it is you think I’ve lied about.”

Here’s the tweet:

When a poster alleged that he had lied about not directing a Superman film, the director defended himself and explained that multiple things changed before he took on a project centered on the last son of Krypton. As per the director:

“Neither of those were lies. I was offered Superman but did Squad instead. A few years later I saw how to tackle Superman & took it on. I didn’t want to be the sole CEO of DC, but when they came & offered it to me AND Peter I said yes because I could focus on the creative side.”

But DC fans weren’t satisfied and grilled Gunn on Twitter for his supposed two-faced way of handling things.

Fans are angered by James Gunn for going back on his words. The news of Affleck not directing the DCU Batman movie has added fuel to the fire of Henry Cavill’s unceremonious and embarrassing departure from the role of Superman. Now, the followers of the franchise aren’t holding back anymore. They are letting their displeasure known to the co-CEO of DC Studios.

While the anger from fans is understandable, it also makes sense that James Gunn waited to have a vision for Superman before he accepted that project. Overall, it doesn’t seem like fans of Cavill will forgive the director for firing the actor from the DCU. So Gunn will continue getting trolled, at least till his Superman project debuts on screen and sincerely starts off the new DCU era.

Superman: Legacy will release on 11 July 2025.
