“The first act of a saga”: Despite Nightmare Box Office Predictions, James Gunn’s DCU Director Wants a Trilogy Like Nolan’s Dark Knight

Despite Nightmare Box Office Predictions, James Gunn's DCU Director Wants a Trilogy Like Nolan's Dark Knight

The much-anticipated movie Blue Beetle is set to release on the 18th of August. But it seems like director Angel Manuel Soto has too many expectations with the movie that he is thinking of making a trilogy before its release. The upcoming film is the first in a planned trilogy, but DC Studios have not approved the next two films at this point of time.

Soto looks fully determined to tell more stories with Jaime Reyes. He and his creative team are proud of what they have accomplished with the film, but obviously, if they want to continue with the next two installments of the film, fans need to show up in its first release.

Some characters that are repeated from the old DCEU will get through this reboot, while others will change with the new narrative. Though many of the DC Cinematic Universe’s recent projects have a questionable future, this doesn’t apply to Blue Beetle because Soto said its story is expanding. They will have more of Jaime Reyes in the future. And during an interview with Total Film, Soto expressed his the same by stating:

“Our first film, the way we wanted to make it, was always with the mentality that we wanted to make at least two more, and taking the traditional three-act structure of a story, we wanted our first film to be basically the first act of a saga.”

Now, speaking with The Playlist, Soto detailed his plans for the Blue Beetle trilogy. He said:

“Of course, we can’t put everything in one movie, and that’s why this is the first act of a bigger saga. There’s so much more to be said that I’m really looking forward to saying.”

Also, the film star Xolo Maridueña said he wants to see the character linked with Justice League.

As for his ideas for a second film, Soto said that Blue Beetle (the first film) is Jamie’s story, so he wanted to focus on him and his family. The movie’s conclusion leaves questions about the scarab, and Soto aims to address those in the second part. For the sequel, he wants to delve into the complete tale of the scarab, its origin, purpose, and the challenges they have to defeat.

Soto did not state anything he had planned for the third film, but his statement appears as if Blue Beetle may not break a leg at the box office. He claimed that he has bigger plans for the second part, but it totally depends upon the fan’s reaction to the upcoming release, which will decide the future of the next two features.

By the way, Box Office Pro initially predicted that the movie’s opening weekend earnings at domestic theaters would range from $12 million to $17 million. They also projected the film’s total domestic earnings to be around $27 million to $55 million.
