Motive Studio, a Canadian video game developer founded by Electronic Arts, has provided a major update for its untitled Iron Man game. The Montreal based studio has been working on in collaboration with Marvel Games to bring the classic character to life, since the announcement of the game in September 2022. Although the quest for details on this project have been scarce, a recent job listing has provided a big update on what programming will be used for the Iron Man game. The listing, which was posted to the Electronic Arts website, says the following:

Motive is looking for an Audio Software Developer to join its Iron Man team using Unreal Engine 5. As an Audio Software Developer, you will play a crucial role in designing, implementing, and optimizing audio systems and features to create an immersive and realistic gaming experience. You will collaborate closely with audio designers, programmers, and other team members to ensure the highest quality audio integration and functionality.

The key to the description in this listing, is that Motive Studio will be using the Unreal Engine 5 program instead of using Frostbite, which is what the developer previously used for the Dead Space remake that came out this year. Unreal Engine 5 is a very popular video game engine that is used by developers across all platforms. It has even been considered the most successful video game engines by Guiness World Records. Although this may only seem like a minor update, it appears to be an important indicator that Motive Studio wants to get its Iron Man game right and is willing to use a well established engine to achieve its’ goal.

What Does the Iron Man Game Mean to the Overall Marvel Universe?

Although there is very little known about Motive Studio’s upcoming Iron Man game, aside from the fact that it is set to be a single-player open-world experience, Marvel Games has been moving on several projects. In the Spider-Man world, we have seen the release of Insomniac Games’ titles Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be releasing in October. Insomniac is also working on a Marvel’s Wolverine game, which has yet to set a release date. Square Enix has worked on Marvel’s Avengers and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and Skydance New Media is working on an untitled Black Panther/Captain America game.

Although most of the games listed above have stories that are single-player experiences, Marvel Games has not connected the worlds together. Each of these titles, outside of sequels in the case of Insomniac Games, is self-contained and do not follow the same interconnectedness that fans have seen on the silver screen. While it might remain this way, some fans cannot help but wonder if the Iron Man game will bring in a new era and combine some future titles together.

If history repeats itself, gamers might see Iron Man lead the charge in creating a more connected universe. However, as of now, there is no way to tell if this will be another game that sticks to the rules Marvel Games titles have been following.

If you are a fan of Marvel, do you think a universe should be created to connect new games or should everything be separated so that titles like Marvel’s Avengers, (which received a mediocre reception) do not taint other properties.
