The casting that ‘almost’ happened

Warner Bros. was courting Tom Cruise to play the male lead in Clint Eastwood‘s version of A Star is Born. Eastwood had been planning to make the film a year before they started, but the project was delayed when Beyoncé, originally supposed to be cast in the lead role, became pregnant. When Beyoncé was ready to return to work, Eastwood was hoping to move forward with the film.

Variety and Deadline both reported that Warner Bros. was interested in Cruise for the lead role, which is an “over-the-hill musician who helps launch the star of an ingenue he falls in love with.” However, it was still unclear whether Cruise was ever interested in the project.

Hollywood director Cameron Crowe, in an interview with the folks at Film School Rejects, spoke about a conversation of his with Clint Eastwood. He said,

“Coming from Clint Eastwood, like, a foot-and-a-half away from you telling you that, I couldn’t wait to tell Tom that.”

Crowe said that he agreed with Eastwood since he has also worked with Cruise in Jerry Maguire and Vanilla Sky. He also added,

“I think it’s true. You could create an argument for a number of other actors, but I don’t know anyone who’s built this kind of body of work in movies that will stand the test of time, and I would be honored if one of our movies was a part of that.” “He’s done so many different, time-defining projects.”
