After enthralling audiences worldwide for so long, Lionsgate’s sci-fi dystopian adventure franchise has proven with its latest entry that it can continue to be a box office hit. The Marvels, on the other hand, has made $197 million worldwide on a gross production budget of $274.8 million, making it the lowest-grossing MCU film and a box office bust.

The fifth film in the series, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, is a prequel to The Hunger Games (2012). Francis Lawrence has taken the director’s chair for this movie, which is based on Michael Lesslie and Michael Arndt’s screenplay and Suzanne Collins’ 2020 novel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Variety reported that Francis Lawrence’s latest flick brought in $19.1 million on its first day of business. Nevertheless, The Marvels has only made $197 million globally, making it the lowest-grossing film in the MCU, even with a $274.8 million gross production budget.

Given that pre-sales and partner participation had covered a large portion of the $100 million production budget, Deadline projected that the movie would turn a profit with a domestic gross of $130 million.

As per Screen Rant, its success might have something to do with the MCU’s failure. The Marvels, which saw an 87 percent decline in its second weekend, has been a disaster for Marvel thus far. The disastrous result left a gap in the box office revenue, which was easily filled by another blockbuster.

Thus, Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds &Snakes is probably going to do well. The Hunger Games series is clearly holding on to its ardent audience across the globe, as fans eagerly anticipate more developments within the series’ universe.

The Hunger Games (2012) is streaming on DIRECTV.
