For the unversed, selective mutism is an anxiety disorder where a person who is normally capable of speech is unable to do so under specific circumstances. In the interview, he shared,
It is a recognized disease called selective mutism. The character is based on a friend of [co-creator] Bill Prady’s who had this pathological shyness. He’s since gotten married and had kids, so he’s been cured of it.
Due to Prady’s friend, Raj was given much depth and humor in his interactions, making him both endearing and empathetic.
At the same time, his social anxiety also made him relate to audiences who might have faced similar experiences at some point in their lives. Despite his inability, Raj’s romantic life has been nothing but interesting, which pretty much-added humor to the show.
