“I really hated the experience. My first American experience was almost my last because it was with the Weinsteins and Miramax. I have got to tell you, two horrible things happened in the late nineties, my father was kidnapped and I worked with the Weinsteins. I know which one was worse… the kidnapping made more sense, I knew what they wanted.”

DelToro faced a hard phase when, in 1998, his father was abducted by bandits in Guadalajara. After 72 days, he returned to his home, however, the horror of the incident always haunted Del Toro’s family, so they decided to leave Mexico.

During the interview, the director said that, though dealing with Weinstein was indeed hard, it taught him how to fight. While working on Mimics, the director was restricted from filming certain scenes. However, he didn’t care much about anyone’s opinion and did as he pleased to rebel against Weinstein’s rule. Del Toro said,

“I don’t know if this is much of an achievement, but it felt like one. I lost casting battles, I lost story battles but the one thing ‘Mimic’ is visually 100% exactly what I wanted. The movie is visually gorgeous, and it has a couple of sequences I’m very proud of.”

Though Del Toro’s first experience of filming his first English movie wasn’t great, what ultimately matters is that he was content with his work.
