The King’s Man, the third in succession to Matthew Vaughn’s wildly popular Kingsman movies is latest in a long line of movies to get postponed. The ongoing CoVID-19 pandemic has brought the entertainment industry to a screeching halt, which also includes screening at theatres and multiplexes.
Kingsman: The Secret Service was released back in 2015 starring Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Caine, Mark Hamill, and Mark Strong, the first entrant in the series became a box-office blockbuster. Kingsman: The Secret Service earned a whopping $414 million on a budget of $94 million.
Taking the box-office by storm, Kingsman: The Secret Service was praised for its highly stylized action sequences, over-the-top violent scenes, and an entertaining plotline that paid homage to the classic trope of English gentlemen saving the day in well-tailored suits.
In 2017, the sequel to the first movie, Kingsman: The Golden Circle was released. Joining the original cast of The Secret Service were Julianne Moore, Halle Berry, Pedro Pascal, Channing Tatum, Elton John, and Jeff Bridges. Despite being another box-office success, Kingsman: The Golden Circle was inferior to its prequel for its predictable plotline as it lacked the element of surprise which made The Secret Service so wildly popular.
To expand the story of the Kingsman franchise, director Matthew Vaughn confirmed that the third film of the franchise would actually be a prequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service. Set in the early 1900s, The King’s Man is a spin-off that will explore the origins of the powerful secret society.
According to Matthew Vaughn, The King’s Man is going to be a period drama infused with the highly stylized action sequences which originally made Kingsman such a massively popular franchise. The King’s Man will delve into the early days of the Kingsman tailors and agency before the secret society became a powerful security council to thwart global terrorism.
Boasting a stellar cast, The King’s Man has Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, Tom Hollander, Daniel Bruhl, Djimon Honsou, Charles Dance, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Rhys Ifans, and Matthew Goode starring in major roles. The movie also has real historical figures, most notably Grigori Rasputin, George V, Nicholas II, Wilhelm II, Erik Jan Hanussen, and Herbert Kitchener.
According to 20th Century Fox (now 20th Century Studios), the official synopsis of The King’s Man is given below.
“As a collection of history’s worst tyrants and criminal masterminds gather to plot a war to wipe out millions, one man and his protégé must race against time to stop them.”
Originally set to be released on November 15, 2019, The King’s Man was pushed back to February 14, 2020. For unknown reasons, the movie was once again pushed back to a later date of September 18, 2020. With the CoVID-19 scare raging through the entire planet, The King’s Man has now become another addition to a long list of movies that have been postponed to a later date of release. Currently, The King’s Man is slated to be released on February 26, 2021.
The Kingsman movie franchise is loosely adapted from the comic book series of the same name created by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons. Subtitled as The Secret Service, the comic book was released back in 2012. Further sequels to The Secret Service have been released. Subtitled as The Big Exit and The Red Diamond, the sequels were released in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
The massive popularity of Kingsman: The Secret Service and its sequel The Golden Circle has prompted another spin-off which will also be directed by Matthew Vaughn. Introduced in The Golden Circle, the American counterpart of Kingsman, Statesman played a major role in the movie. Halle Berry, Channing Tatum, and Jeff Bridges would be reprising their roles in the yet to be announced Statesman movie.
Alongside The King’s Man, Matthew Vaughn has also been working on the definitive sequel to The Golden Circle. Titled as Kingsman: The Blue Blood, the movie was scheduled to enter production in early 2020. Director Matthew Vaughn wished Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to be the major antagonist of the movie.
Kingsman: The Blue Blood is set to be a conclusive ending to the mentor-protege relationship between Colin Firth’s Harry Hart and Taron Egerton’s Gary ‘Eggsy’ Unwin. The title of the movie was confirmed in the September 2020 issue of Empire.
In June 2018, Matthew Vaugh also confirmed that an eight-episode Kingsman mini-series was in early development. For now, it’s safe to assume that fans of the Kingsman franchise are in for a treat in the upcoming years.
