The Last of Us franchise has really grown over the years; this is in no small part thanks to the HBO series that was released in 2023. The first game told the story of an unbreakable relationship between a man and a girl whom he saw as his daughter. This relationship developed over time as they traveled through a broken world full of scary obstacles.

This game eventually got a sequel that took an instant reverse turn from what the original did. Instead of telling the story of finding humanity in a rotten world, this game showed the effects of one’s actions. A bloodier and more heartbreaking sequel to one of the best-told stories ever told in a video game. And now it appears a sequel will be released someday, which would feature a location that fans heard of but never saw in The Last of Us Part 2.

The Last of Us Part 3 might take fans to a brand-new location

Ellie is a popular character; fans of gaming know her well enough. Even those who have no idea what The Last of Us game is all about have some knowledge of this character, and of course, Joel. They were the leading pair in Sony’s critically acclaimed PlayStation exclusive.

That game was launched back in 2013 for the PlayStation 3, and it was set in Boston. After the fall of civilization, Joel works as a smuggler who smuggles stuff in and out of cities closely controlled by the military. He is eventually tasked with delivering a person from one location to another for a larger purpose.

Eventually, it is revealed that this person, whose name is Ellie, has some kind of immunity to the disease that turns humans into slaves to a fungus. And some people want to find out how she is immune and use that knowledge to develop a cure.

This game’s sequel, The Last of Us Part 2, follows the story of Ellie and Joel after they settle down in a colony. A mysterious person comes around, captures Joel and bashes his head using a golf club. She does it because, in Last of Us 1, Joel finds out that a cure can be found after doctors dig through Ellie’s brain, not leaving any chance of her survival, and kills the doctors to save Ellie.

One of the doctors is the father of Abby, the person who kills Joel. After this, Ellie goes on a journey to end Abby. This game takes place in Seattle, Washington. She explores the city as she is looking for her enemy.

And now, some fans have uncovered an interesting detail that might point out where The Last of Us Part 3 would be set. In Part 2, Abby once hears a radio message suggesting that some of the fireflies have set camp on Catalina Island.

Maybe she would be shown traveling to Catalina in Part 3? Catalina Island can’t be the only location for that game, though, as it’s not too big for one game. Then again, it depends on the writing; if the game is written well enough, the smallest of locations can serve the purpose.

But there are some hurdles with this

While the prospect of this new game being set in a new location is awesome, one must understand that there’s a slim chance this will happen anytime soon. Currently, the director of the series, Neil Druckmann, is busy with HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2. He would then work on that rumored medieval fantasy game by Naughty Dog.

Maybe after that game, fans would see something Last of Us-related. For now, only the upcoming series is official, nothing else.
