During the latest interview with Buzzfeed, the video game creator talked about how he and showrunner Craig Mazin were able to collaborate on such a project and make it the overnight success that it has turned out today. Along with this, he also talked about how the sales of the games have been positively affected by the show’s popularity, which has given Naughty Dog an incentive to create a third part of The Last of Us. Druckmann said:

“If we can come up with a compelling story that has a universal message and statement about love then we will tell that story. If we can’t come up with something, we have a very strong ending with Part 2 and that will be the end.”

The one and probably the only reason that the show is so popular is the reason that the show follows the script of the video game narration to the point with very little to no deviation at all from the source material. This, combined with the larger-than-life performance of its lead cast Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey brings the characters of Joel and Ellie to life as they traverse the post-apocalyptic wasteland of the United States.
