The Last of Us multiplayer game has been in the works for some years now. The last few reports stated that the game development is on hold and Naughty Dog laying off employees only brought more concerns if the game will ever see the light of the day. However, there are chances that The Last of Us multiplayer could still be in the works as Vinit Agarwal, game director of The Last of Us hinted at the same saying he’s still on that game.
The Last of Us Multiplayer Game Director Shares Hopeful Update
The original The Last of Us launched with factions multiplayer. It was highly loved by fans who hoped to see the same in The Last of Us Part 2 but Naughty Dog had other plans. The developers released the game as a single-player experience with no multiplayer mode. Naughty Dog later revealed at Summer Game Fest 2022 that it is developing The Last of Us multiplayer as a standalone title and also showcased a couple of concept arts.
Despite the hype and hopes for the game, several reports suggested that the was facing difficulties internally. There were rumors that the game wasn’t turning out how PlayStation had hoped and some reports even stated that the development was “on ice.” However, Vinit Agarwal, game director of The Last of Us multiplayer has shared an update hinting that the game is still in development.
Vinit Agarwal took to X, formerly Twitter to share that he completed Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and at the end of the tweet Agarwal that he is “still working on that game” which is believed to be The Last of Us multiplayer. Agarwal stated:
I did it! Wow, that was hard, easily 300+ Marios dead in the process. And so this tweet can live on in peace… yes, I’m still working on that game.
This tweet from Agarwal suggests that PlayStation hasn’t pulled the plug on the game after all. However, it can not be said for certain when the game could finally be released or even revealed to the fans which was supposed to happen this year. After the reports stating that the game is on hold and even “dead,” this news from the game director himself is only what fans needed.
Naughty Dog shared an update on The Last of Us multiplayer last year that they would reveal the game in 2023, however, earlier this year the developer said that it has realized that it is only for the best to give the game some more time.
It also hinted at a new single-player experience currently under development which is speculated to be The Last of Us Part 3. It said:
We know many of you have been looking forward to hearing more about our The Last of Us multiplayer game. We’re incredibly proud of the job our studio has done thus far, but as development has continued, we’ve realized what is best for the game is to give it more time.
Our team will continue to work on the project, as well as our other games in development, including a brand new single-player experience; we look forward to sharing more soon.
It is not certain what is going on with the game right now but seems like it could still happen. A recent leak about The Last of Us multiplayer game suggested that the game could feature 40-player lobbies. This leak came from the LinkedIn profile of Ian Blake, a former Associate Game Designer at Naughty Dog.
A job listing at Naughty Dog also revealed that the game would be free to play as it looked to hire a Live Ops Producer position for its multiplayer title. No other major details have been known or heard about the same so far.
