This isn’t what fans expected when Naughty Dog announced layoffs and canceled projects. The latest release by the studio saw The Last of Us Part 1 being disastrous for PC users. The game was unplayable by most PC users. The optimization, and the presence of bugs, many of which were game-breaking, didn’t do justice to the game. Naughty Dog, before announcing The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, also indefinitely delayed a multiplayer game based on The Last of Us’ factions mode.

At the same time, they also announced that they were working on a single-player game. Naughty Dog has mostly disappointed fans with its latest announcement. The studio is home to some amazing IPs. At the same time, the next The Last of Us game is reportedly in development. Instead of offering something fresh to its fans, the studio chose to remaster a game that was released only 3 years ago.

Why the Last of Us Part 2 Remastered Does Not Make Any Sense

The sentiment towards The Last of Us series has been largely positive due to the quality of the entries in the franchise.

Naughty Dog recently announced layoffs in October 2023. Joining the likes of Ubisoft, Amazon Games, Telltale, Epic Games, and Riot Games. This was done for the studio to reassess its strategy and churn out games that have long-term viability.

Naughty Dog also revealed that had been working on a multiplayer spinoff game based on the Factions multiplayer mode in The Last of Us. The game was shelved in May 2023 in a Twitter post. A “brand new single-player experience” was confirmed to be in development by the studio.

All of this got fans hyped for the studio’s next release. It was very underwhelming when the announcement was that of The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. Naughty Dog’s plans were leaked earlier on PSN. This was the post shared the leak on Twitter. The rationale for releasing The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, a title that was released just three years ago is beyond most fans of the series.

Leaks Regarding Naughty Dog’s Latest Singleplayer Experience and the Redundancy of the Last of Us 2 Remastered

Before The Last of Us Part II Remastered, The Last of Us Part I had a very rocky launch on the PC.

Naughty Dog was missing from the PlayStation Showcase. The new single-player title that Naughty Dog is working on was leaked to be a completely new IP which would be similar to the Mass Effect series by BioWare. This was leaked by a 4chan user anonymously. While the post is no longer available on the platform.

The statement made by the user was:

Game is a third-person shooter and plays very similarly to Mass Effect 2 (with choice system, companions, and everything.

The anonymous leaker further stated that:

Plot is about the discovery of a solar system that has a giant eye for a star in the galaxy, and [is] about human civilisation freaking out [that] it might do something horrific to them…

While an IP that would be similar to Mass Effect, developed by Naughty Dog, the developers for The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, sounds amazing. It is worth noting that the leak doesn’t come from an insider source. It doesn’t come from an industry veteran but an anonymous user. It is needless to say it should be taken with a tablespoon of salt.

The announcement made by Naughty Dog dates back to May 2023. So far there is no update on the new single-player game which is being worked on by the studio. Video comparisons between The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered trailer and The Last of Us Part 2‘s 2020 footage on the PlayStation 5 have already started popping up on the internet.

It doesn’t take a very long look for one to figure out that there seems absolutely no substantial difference between the two. The game, despite being released for the PS4 at launch does not look dated at all. It is fair to say that the decision to remaster was most likely a waste of effort and resources for the company. Naughty Dog is one such studio that has been largely successful in its ventures of video game development.

Despite the recent flack it has received for almost completely ignoring the PC when releasing The Last of Us Part 1. The studio’s pedigree has largely been enough to cover for it. The latest announcement regarding The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered was enough to underwhelm fans. Also, the fresh coat of paint isn’t convincing enough to the users.
