New details have surfaced and some fans are optimistic that the developers will reuse concepts from the canceled project for the next game.

Naughty Dog is one of the greatest game developers and Sony treats the studio like its golden goose. However, the developers only released remakes and remasters of older projects for the PlayStation 5 and the lack of any original projects for the current generation, the fans are worried about the future of The Last of Us.
The sequel must have set the developers back, and Neil Druckmann did seemingly hint that another game is coming, there are no solid answers as to when the gaming community will get a chance to return to that world. New reports of a casting call for a PlayStation Studios game are leaning towards another violent Naughty Dog game, some fans hope to see shades of the canceled multiplayer bleed into Part 3.

The developers were adamant about working on an online multiplayer game as a successor to the original version of Factions with a more ambitious structure. Unfortunately, the project was canceled and will most not see the light of day but fans are curious as to whether or not the work finished on the project will be left to waste.
Perhaps Naughty Dog will bundle a new multiplayer mode for Part 3 as many have suggested the studio should have done with Part 2 and for the remake of Part 1. The studio is said to be working on a new IP rather than a sequel and most of Druckmann’s quotes have been misconstrued and taken out of context putting the franchise’s future in flux.
The Last of Us Factions Is an Underrated Gem for Multiplayer Gaming
Despite the cancellation, the gaming community is still excited about the future. Some fans have already drawn up concepts for new kinds of Infected to improve the enemy variety of Part 3, and the designs are pure nightmare fuel that will only make the experience more difficult and memorable.
There is no telling what transpired at Naughty Dog that made the developers pull the plug on something that could appeal to the modern gaming community. Perhaps the studio realized it had bit more than it could chew and shifted the focus on projects that needed the most attention.
Perhaps it is for the best and the team saw the possibility of the game failing. Naughty Dog has been on hot waters since the sequel and more public criticism is the last thing they need.
Players are hooked on the redefined gameplay in Part 2 and hope to see more improvements. The studio has a lot of pressure riding towards Part 3.
