HBO’s The Last of Us is a zombie-apocalyptic show inspired by the survival horror game series of the same name. While the Pedro Pascal-led series has been looking up to the game series created by Naughty Dog for source material, it looks like the two might just end up swapping positions in the foreseeable future.

Neil Druckmann, the co-president of Naughty Dog has announced that there are high chances of the third installment in the franchise’s game series drawing inspiration from the HBO show.

Neil Druckmann Shares An Exciting Update for The Last of Us Part 3

The Last of Us is an extensively popular post-apocalyptic game franchise developed by Naughty Dog with two main game instalments released and a third part reportedly in the works. With a gripping storyline and brilliant graphics, it has been lauded to be one of the best apocalyptic video games. In fact, its popularity is so widespread that the franchise has managed to sell more than 37 million copies as of December 2022.

While two main games are already available on various gaming platforms, creative director and programmer Neil Druckmann has shared much-awaited updates with regard to the third part of the game series. Addressing the future of The Last of Us games, Druckmann, 44, said that if and when Naughty Dog proceeds with designing more games then he’s surely going to pick some “elements” from the HBO show and “apply” them to the games.

“If we ever revisit them in game form, which remains to be seen, there are definitely elements that I’m going to take from the series that would apply to the games.” 

While there haven’t been any official confirmations with regard to the future of the game series, the Israeli-American video game developer did affirm fans by saying that there was a solid possibility for the studio to further explore the game’s future. Meanwhile, the HBO series has already been greenlit for a new season as the first part comes to an end.

All We Know About Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us

The Last of Us season 1 bid its farewell to fans with a thrilling finale on March 12, 2023 and people are already impatient for the new season.

Although season 2 of the Bella Ramsey-starrer had already been announced shortly after the show’s premiere, there hasn’t been any release date attached to it yet. However, Pedro Pascal did claim that the second season could very well start filming this year itself so hopefully fans would get to see the finished product during late 2024 or early 2025.

Besides that, it has also been clarified that The Last of Us season 2 will be adapting certain aspects of the second game. But Craig Mazin also mentioned that given how big the second game is, it might just take two whole seasons to fit it.
