There are a few time jumps in the original video game. There is, as we all know, a 20-year gap after the death of Joel’s daughter. However, there is another time gap in the video game, this time between part one and part two. The Last of Us: Part II takes place five years after its predecessor. Now, this small time gap did receive raised eyebrows from the fans in relation to the idea that Bella Ramsey’s Ellie could be recast in season 2. Why? Well, because while in the first part, Ellie is fourteen, she will be nineteen in the second.

It’s fair to note that a five-year gap is not that big of a deal in Hollywood, especially when they didn’t recast Pedro Pascal’s Joel after twenty years. However, that didn’t stop fans from speculating and they had even found their favorite choice for the recast – Alba Baptista. In the end, though, Ramsey has confirmed through Twitter that she will, in fact, be returning for the second season. She stated that she was “taking a ride with” her “best frienddddd (again)”.

As fans are super excited to see Ramsey continue the role, we just know that the second season will be even more thrilling than the first. As for now, The Last of Us season one is definitely going to be increasing our adrenaline with each episode as the adventures of the iconic Ellie-Joel duo have just begun.

As The Last of Us was one of the rare wins when it comes to live-action adaptations of video games, a season two was never out of the question. The only thing fans were waiting for was an official announcement which they got a few days ago, much to their excitement.

The writer and creative director of the namesake video game, Neil Druckmann, who also worked as the series’ executive producer, released a statement addressing the renewal. In his statement, he expressed his gratitude to the fans of the show. He mentioned the team of The Last of Us and stated that they managed to meet the high expectations he had for the show.

“I’m humbled, honored, and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie’s journey. The collaboration with Craig Mazin, our incredible cast & crew, and HBO exceeded my already high expectations. Now we have the absolute pleasure of being able to do it again with season two! On behalf of everyone at Naughty Dog & PlayStation, thank you!”

Showrunner Craig Mazin also spared a few words acknowledging the show getting picked up for season two. He thanked Druckmann’s partnership as well as millions of fans of the show stating that he was already ready to dive back into the game.

“I’m so grateful to Neil Druckmann and HBO for our partnership, and I’m even more grateful to the millions of people who have joined us on this journey. The audience has given us the chance to continue, and as a fan of the characters and world Neil and Naughty Dog created, I couldn’t be more ready to dive back in.”
