Back in early 2023, gamers received arguably the best TV show adaptation of a video game that has ever been, and that show was The Last of Us. Before the show’s release, many gamers were sceptical that the show would stick to the game’s gory and horrific storyline, but luckily the producers of the show were faithful to the source material and ensured that the show was a smash hit.
Throughout the show’s first season, gamers were full of shock, as the show was just as amazing as the original game. However, gamers are now concerned about whether the show will continue its good luck streak as the second season is currently being filmed and is said to follow the second game’s plot just like the first season, but many are concerned that at this rate, The Last of Us could receive the same treatment that Game of Thrones received, which nearly tanked the franchise.
Why Could The Last of Us TV Show Follow the Same Route as Game of Thrones?
As stated above, The Last of Us TV show is currently set to return with its second season and is currently being planned and filmed. At the moment, the next season of the show will follow the same story as the second game in the franchise, with some minor tweaks.
For obvious reasons, it is a lot harder to develop a video game than it is to film a TV show, which means that while this second season is currently being filmed and could be released sometime in the next year or two, it is highly likely that The Last of Us Part 3 could release in the next two to three years.
This would mean that the showrunners would either make the decision to create a whole new story for the third season of the show or would have to wait till the next game has been finalized and released, but this is highly unlikely as the show has been a major hit and will likely continue to grow with its popularity.
Sadly, we have seen how this method of production works out for a franchise as big as this, as Game of Thrones received the same treatment when the producers reached the climax of the show with its final season while the book writer George R. R. Martin was still working on the final book in the series.
This led to many fans of the franchise being let down, as some of their favorite characters were killed off for no reason, or certain storylines were forgotten or overwritten by the directors. Since there is a lot of content from the second game to comb over before it is officially written and produced as a TV show, it is highly likely that we won’t see its release for a long time, giving Naughty Dog, the developers behind TLOU, plenty of time to work on the third part of the franchise.
If The Last of Us Does Receive the Game of Thrones Treatment, Could It Actually Turn Out Well?
Currently, there is a lot of attention on the second season of The Last of Us, as the actress who will be playing Abby in the second season has officially been announced, and that actress is Kaitlyn Dever, who is known for her roles in No One Will Save You and Last Man Standing.
This has pleased many fans of the franchise, as originally fans petitioned for Kaitlyn to be cast in the role of Ellie, which was ultimately given to Bella Ramsey as the showrunners were looking for a younger actress to play the role.
Now that the actress for Abby has been announced, gamers are excited to see the results of the second season of The Last of Us, but some gamers are still concerned for the future. Since this project has a major following, the producers will ensure that they keep the source material in the second season and will most likely contact the Naughty Dog team, who are in charge of the game’s development, and discuss their plans for future game installments.
After the Game of Thrones fiasco, is it highly unlikely that HBO will jump into a project like this and decide to move away from the source material just to continue a project, even if the original creators are still deciding on where the different characters and stories progress? For now, though, we can only hope that the showrunners take their time with the second season of the show and allow Naughty Dog the time to decide on the future of the franchise.
