The jump from Avatar: The Last Airbender to Avatar: The Legend of Korra left a lot of gaps in between for fans and the studio to fill in. From the eerie absence of Sokka in the sequels to the identity of Toph’s children’s father, fans have been curious about several such questions for quite some time.
One of the fan theories that has been making the rounds in the fandom is about the identity of Lin and Suyin’s fathers. We know that the Beifong sisters are half-siblings, but it is never publically revealed who is the father of either of the characters. However, one fan theory points towards the possibility that Sokka could be Suyin’s father.
We know that Sokka is not Lin Beifong’s father in Avatar: Legend of Korra
Lin Beifong is the elder daughter of Toph, who served as the Republic City Chief of Police when Avatar Korra came to the city for the first time, following in the footsteps of her mother. She is an efficient metal bender, and serves as a mentor figure to the Avatar and her friends, together with Tenzin.
However, we also know that Tenzin and Lin have dated in the past, which rules out the possibility of Lin’s father being Sokka. If that were the case, Lin and Tenzin would be cousins, which would make their romance a little too icky for a children’s show. Lin and Tenzin had a brief stint before the two broke up, with Lin almost devastating Air Temple island (as she revealed to Makko after he broke up with Korra).
However, we know that the fathers of Suyin and Lin were not the same, so there is still a possibility that Toph had a Suyin with Sokka.
There is a significant amount of evidence pointing towards a Toph-Sokka relationship
To begin with, In Avatar: The Legend of Korra, Tsuki is not even mentioned. Not by Sokka in the flashback, or by any of the members of the Gaang. It is safe to assume that Sokka and Tsuki might not have lasted long after the series, and Sokka could have moved on from the Kyoshi warrior.
On the other hand, there are a lot of things about Suyin Beifong that make her seem related to Sokka. To begin with, her skin tone is significantly darker than that of Lin, indicating that her father had a darker skin tone, which could be Sokka. Further, she wears bandages on her arm during her training session, similar to Sokka. There is also her cool confidence which would no doubt come from Sokka’s influence.
Not to mention that in Avatar: The Last Airbender, Toph had a thing for Sokka, which could have blossomed into a brief relationship between the duo.
