Call of Duty Black Ops 6’s announcement left everyone in awe. The game’s marketing campaign was perceived as controversial by fans, something the subseries is known for. Apart from that, something else also puts the game on the same shelf as titles like GTA 6.

Apart from having a huge budget, the development times for the two upcoming games are much longer than those of their siblings, which is anomalous, at least for the former’s case. But if it fares well in the market, its development time could be a significant reason.

Call of Duty Black Ops 6’s 4-Year-Long Development Time Might Be a Huge Opportunity

It wasn’t long ago that Modern Warfare 3 was being bashed by critics and review-bombed by fans for feeling more like an expansion at the price of a standalone game. It also gave fans enough reasons to think that Acitivision’s FPS series is now only a shadow of what it once was. And fans were skeptical about whatever would come next.

However, almost everything officially revealed since the title was announced has helped spread the hype for the upcoming game. In an interview with Games Beat, two directors from Treyarch were asked why the studio decided to spend an extra year developing the game. To this, they said that:

If you asked each person in the studio, I think you’d have a different answer to that. For me, it’s been exciting–we say we’re redefining what Black Ops is.Being intentional. The journey, the four years, the longer dev cycle has allowed us to be very intentional about everything we wanted to do.

A longer game, while not always guaranteeing that the game will turn out virtually perfect (case in point being Cyberpunk 2077), does give developers more time to iron out wrinkles. Moreover, it is a good pace change for a franchise labeled as a cash cow used to gain profits from microtransactions.

Long Development Times Like Those of Black Ops 6 Are Also Associated With Titles Like Helldivers 2 and GTA 6

The upcoming title in the series will be released in October 2024.

As time passed and people moved over the game, Rockstar revealed the first trailer for GTA 6. The studio also recently narrowed down the release window for the upcoming open-world game, and it seems like it will take close to eleven years to serve a well-cooked dish for fans waiting eagerly.

Similarly, Helldivers 2 came out nine years after the first one, and the upcoming FPS game by Treyarch will be a product of four years of development, the longest for a title in the series. Moreover, the latest standard set by Activision with Modern Warfare 3 is pretty low. It should ideally be surpassed easily by Treyarch, arguably the fan-favorite studio among the three associated with the series.

Especially after the acquisition by Microsoft, a lot is riding on the reception and the sale of the upcoming game in Activision’s premier FPS series. They most likely made the right call by giving Treyarch more breathing room.
