However, Stone wasn’t really one hundred percent into her role in the franchise, rather she wanted to play Peter Parker’s iconic love interest Mary Jane to fill Kirsten Dunst’s shoes. Stacy has also been a love interest of Parker, but initially Stone was more into the celebrated character.

Before Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane usually comes to mind when one thinks of the love interest of Peter Parker. In a similar retrospect, Stone was also up for Mary Jane. She was almost sure of playing Mary Jane and she was in a bit of awe after hearing that she was assigned to play Stacy.

“I thought that Mary Jane was so great. A couple of months went by and they called me and said, ‘We would like for you to audition but the part is Gwen Stacy’, and I was like ‘Uh, I don’t know who Gwen Stacy is?’ I haven’t read the comic books growing up,” Stone once told Black Film.

Stone had zero clue about Stacy which initially detached her from the character. Later, the actor went on to study the character. “So I looked into Gwen’s story and I just fell in love with Gwen’s story because it is so incredibly epic and tragic,” she revealed. And “just incredible in the way it affects Peter going forward with Mary Jane, who is another character that I love, obviously,” she added. Stone played Stacy with a delicate charm and her role brought the character to life in the live-action movie.

Emma Stone Loved Gwen Stacy More Than Mary Jane

After reading about Gwen Stacy, Stone was hooked and easily shifted her interest from Jane to Stancy. Stone also loved the elevated nature of the character which was far from the likes of Kirsten Dunst’s portrayal of Mary Jane. Also, Stone was relieved after the makers wanted her to play Stacy over Jane. “I wasn’t playing Mary Jane, so that was a bit of a relief,” Stone said while speaking with Daily News.

“It was nice to start fresh. You’re right, Gwen doesn’t come across as a damsel in distress. She’s incredibly responsible and has to be – she’s the eldest kid in her family and is constantly fearing that her dad [police Capt. Stacy] is going to die in his job every day,” she added.

Stone was fascinated with Stacy and that purely came from her reading about the character. The actor eventually found herself playing the character on the big screen and many fans have hailed her portrayal. However, the Oscar winner doesn’t regret her likes for Mary Jane as well. Now, Stone is all set to appear in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things which is scheduled for release on 8 December 2023.
