While on the live-action side, it’s been a hit-or-miss situation for Netflix originals, mostly misses as only a few of the originals aren’t always inherently bland, this isn’t the case for their Animation slate. Although it has been only a few years since Netflix created their first original animated feature, Klaus, one of the greatest Christmas films of all time, they’ve seemingly cemented themselves as one of the best in it.
Unsurprisingly, the streaming service witnessed yet another gem this holiday season, Amber Noizumi and Michael Green’s Blue Eye Samurai, which even left George R.R. Martin speechless.
Blue Eye Samurai Is the Most Gorgeous Piece of Art George R.R. Martin Has Seen
Despite releasing late into the year, Blue Eye Samurai quickly garnered major buzz following its departure from the often bland Netflix original releases, mostly live-action. Created by the husband and wife team Green and Noizumi, Blue Eye Samurai has already been renewed for a second season following its overwhelming success, currently rated at 100% at the Tomatometer. And Game of Thrones Creator George R.R. Martin was one of the many who shared their fascination with the show, with Martin stating it’s “the most gorgeous art that I have ever seen”.
“Blue Eye Samurai has the most gorgeous art that I have ever seen. The story is terrific as well. Set in Japan during the Edo period, it is violent, visceral, sexy (and more than a little kinky in spots), with amazing action sequences and a cast of well-developed characters, colorful and complex and real. Flawed heroes, villains who are more than cartoons (though they are cartoons, being drawn, after all).”
Being a huge fan of the medium itself, George R.R. Martin revealed they’re also working on getting a few animated spin-offs of GOT running, as he further lauded the Netflix show.
The Planned GOT Animated Spin-Offs Will Take a Page From Blue Eye Samurai’s Book
From 10,000 Ships to Flea Bottom, reports of several Game of Thrones spin-offs being in the works have circulated on the web for years, which never really went anywhere. But George R.R. Martin recently confirmed that three animated GOT spin-offs are currently in development. And while it can’t be said for sure if they’ll make it out of the writers’ room or not, Martin assured fans they’ll try to make it as gripping and gorgeous as Blue Eye Samurai.
“So we now have three animated projects underway…Will any of them make it to air? happen? No way to know. Nothing is certain in Hollywood. But if it does happen, with one or two or all three shows, I hope we can make them as good as gorgeous and gripping as BLUE EYE SAMURAI. We will for damn sure try.”
Whether the planned spin-offs will take off the ground remains to be seen, at least a second season of Blue Eye Samurai is confirmed, which both fans and Martin can’t wait to get their hands on.
Blue Eye Samurai is available to stream on Netflix.
