James Cameron, the king of the box office and the abyss, has been on a collision course with the ocean for decades. But his deep-sea dreams almost got swallowed up by the blue behemoth that is Avatar 2. Eight times, this fearless filmmaker risked life and limb to explore the watery world, only to be sidetracked by the demands of Pandora. Cameron confessed during Q&A (via The Hollywood Reporter):

I’ve done eight [previous] expeditions. Pulling it off always feels like a miracle. They’ve all been very carefully planned. But when you go in the ocean, the ocean hasn’t read your script — you never know what’s going to happen.

The Oscar-winning director was talking about his latest obsession, OceanXplorers—a mind-blowing six-episode docuseries that follows a fearless crew as they dive deep into the unknown. But the series almost didn’t happen, as Cameron explained,

We got preempted by the pandemic, and then there was all the time at sea with Avatar.

The pressure to produce another blockbuster was intense, but the ocean’s allure was too powerful to resist. The 69-year-old admitted that he couldn’t be on the ship himself, which he regretted a bit. However, once he reviewed the footage, he was astounded. The sight of young researchers interacting directly with the animals—whether tagging a hammerhead or being surrounded by a massive pod of orcas—was simply incredible.

Cameron highlights that OceanXplorers stands as one of the most ambitious oceanic adventures ever filmed. Despite facing numerous challenges, including competing with the juggernaut of Avatar 2, the fact that it came to fruition feels almost like a miracle.

The Terminator saga has had its share of hits and misses, with Terminator: Dark Fate getting decent reviews but flopping at the box office. Now, the franchise is gearing up for a fresh start with Terminator Zero, an anime series set to shake things up (via The Hollywood Reporter). James Cameron, the genius behind the original films, is curious but cool about this new take. He’s keen to see how it tackles the classic Judgment Day dilemma.

Cameron’s got a secret project in the works, but he’s keeping it locked up tighter than a T-800’s CPU—joking that the studio might send a robot after him if he spills too much. Even though his return with Dark Fate didn’t revive the franchise, his latest moves could just be the jolt it needs. Fans, get ready; the future is about to get interesting.
