As Marvel Studios continues to expand its universe, new reports have revealed that the studio has hired the 12 Monkeys showrunner Terry Matalas for a new Disney+ series following Paul Bettany’s Vision. The series has been in talks since his last appearance alongside Elizabeth Olsen in the 2021 Disney+ series WandaVision.
The 2021 Marvel series featured Wanda Maximoff reincarnating the character in the series, which later introduced a ghost-white android version without memories. The new series is expected to explore his journey to regain his memories and purpose in life.
Marvel Hired Terry Matalas For an Untitled Vision Series
According to Variety, Marvel Studios has brought in the TV writer and director Terry Matalas for the new Disney+ series centered around Vision. Matalas has joined the Marvel series as the showrunner with Paul Bettany set to reprise his MCU role.
The new series would likely take place following the events of WandaVision and is expected to be released in 2026. It has been in discussions since 2022 when the studio initially shared its plan to further explore the character in the franchise.
Earlier reports stated Jac Schaeffer would be serving as the writer for the series, however, her association became uncertain when the project disappeared from her WGA profile. So far, updates regarding Schaeffer’s involvement with the show remain scarce.
She is now currently working on another WandaVision spin-off, Agatha All Along, starring Kathryn Hahn. The Vision series will fall under the studio’s new approach for limited releases per year. And the expectations are high with the Star Trek: Picard creator taking the helm of the show.
Who is Marvel’s Newest Showrunner for Vision Series?
The TV writer and director Terry Matalas has recently gained recognition for his contributions to Star Trek: Picard. He has served as a writer, producer, and co-showrunner of the series, which has enjoyed a successful run for three seasons.
Some of his other work also includes the CBS reboot of MacGyver Season 4, Nightflyers, along with the 2003 series Star Trek: Enterprise. However, it was the Syfy mystery drama, 12 Monkeys, which is considered some of his best work so far.
Loosely based on Bruce Willis‘ 1995 film of the same name, the series follows a scavenger from the future who travels back in time to prevent a deadly plague and hunt down 12 monkeys who are responsible for releasing the virus. Matalas took over as showrunner with Travis Fickett in Season 2.
It ran for 4 seasons on Syfy and received favorable reception from critics and audiences, who praised the show for its complex and well-defined storyline, cast performance, and meticulous attention to detail. Fans have described it as a captivating and immersive experience.
12 Monkeys is also considered a highly underrated sci-fi show. Despite its favorable reception from critics and audiences, Syfy discontinued the series after three seasons, but it has since gained a dedicated following on various streaming platforms.
