Despite its enormous popularity, Code Geass didn’t receive much support during the early production stage. This put the production team under stress and even considered shutting down due to the lack of funds. However, thanks to the Pizza Hut collaboration, the show gets back on its feet. In an interview with FullFrontal, Code Geass director talks about the team’s struggles during the anime production.
The conditions in the studio were no good, which meant we couldn’t deliver on the quality viewers expected. As a professional, that felt pretty bad. But the producers told me to wait and hang on, because we had made a lot of fans already and that they were ready to give us the time.

Code Geass director also opens up about several Pizza Hut references and the collaboration that revived the anime. He even accepts that, although the Pizza Hut collaboration didn’t seem to fit with Code Geass, the production team embraced the challenge and had fun with the idea. Director Gorō Taniguchi reveals:
Why in hell would they always be eating pizza? (laughs) But since we had to go along with it, I figured we should go all the way. I started having fun with it, and the rest of the staff also got on with it as well.
Surprisingly, many fans were unaware of the Pizza Hut collaboration and overlooked the references, believing it was a humorous concept by the production team. Pizza Hut Japan paid a huge amount for almost half of Code Geass season production, which helped the anime to continue and set its legacy in the community. However, the editors continued to add more Pizza Hut references even after the collaboration ended, as they believed it to be a fun idea.
Was Lelouch’s Sacrifice the Perfect Conclusion to Code Geass?
Lelouch has been the star of the series because of his noble intentions to make the world a better place for his sister. Despite being the protagonist, Lelouch’s immoral methods to depose the Britannia Kingdom turn him into a villainous character. He manipulated his own army and betrayed their trust to commit mass murders of Britannians and Japanese to achieve his goal.
However, that doesn’t stop fans from sympathizing with his character as Lelouch’s sacrifice at the end of the series shifts the moral compass of many viewers. Throughout the series, Lelouch’s only goal was to create a peaceful world for his sister, Nunnally. Although Lelouch was also driven by his revenge against the Britannia Kingdom, the protagonist did consider a peaceful treaty with Princess Euphemia.

Unfortunately, after losing control of his Geass, Lelouch had to kill his first love, Euphemia, with his own hands. Because of his manipulation and mass murders, Lelouch was no longer seen as a savior, but more like a dictator. Burdened by so many innocent deaths, Lelouch sacrifices himself and leaves everything to Nunnally and his best friend, Suzaku Kururugi.
