Kevin Costner’s The Bodyguard, starring his good friend Whitney Houston is a cult classic today. With the combined forces and fame of its lead stars and an incredible storyline, the film continues to be enjoyed by many even today. So, it is startling to think that a sequel to the brilliant film was in the works starring Princess Diana.
While Kevin Costner has spoken about the planned sequel several times, he went on to give a full account of how the plans for a sequel came about in a recent appearance on the Howard Stern Show.
Kevin Costner Had a Sweet Conversation With Princess Diana about The Bodyguard 2
Princess Diana lost her life at 36, in a tragic car accident that continues to garner attention, speculation, and controversy. While the Princess’ legacy lives on, it is striking to imagine that the Royal was slated to make her Hollywood debut in The Bodyguard 2. A sequel to Kevin Costner’s hit romantic thriller, the film never got a chance to take off because of Diana’s early passing.
In various interviews, Costner had talked about his plans to make a sequel to his award-winning film with Princess Diana in the lead. In his appearance on The Howard Stern Show too the actor detailed the conversations he had with the late Royal about the film.
I started talking to her… ‘I’m going to do Bodyguard 2 and I think I can build this around you. Would you be interested?’ And she goes ‘yes… I think I would like to do this.’ She was very sweet…
Costner then revealed what the story of the said film was going to be. Costner was not going to be the bodyguard but would accidentally end up with the Princess who had apparently broken it off with the Royal family.
While the premise looked interesting, Costner later remarked he has no plans to make the film ever, since according to him, nobody could ever star in the film except Princess Diana.
The Royal Family Did Not Like Kevin Costner’s Idea to Make The Bodyguard 2 With Princess Diana
Kevin Costner, over the years, has been vocal about the sequel to The Bodyguard and how Princess Diana wanted to co-star opposite him. But in a new interview on The Howard Stern Show, the Oscar-winner unveiled several new details about the planned sequel, which he has scarcely ever revealed elsewhere.
We were going to do it. But you know who was so important in that process, Sarah Ferguson.
Stated Costner about the Duchess of York. He then went on to state that the Royal Family kind of turned against him after it was leaked that he had been planning to make such a film with the Princess, a year after her death.
It leaked out that I had been prepping Bodyguard 2 with her. The Royal Family kind of turned on me a little bit… And it got actually kind of ugly… And I called them up and I said.. ‘You need to stop’.
While things eventually cooled down, the Yellowstone star also revealed he had a surprise meeting with Prince William, years after Princess Diana’s death. As per Costner, the Prince disclosed that the late Princess used to fancy him.
After all these years, the untold stories and behind-the-scenes discussions about this project not only add a new layer to the legacy of both the film and Princess Diana, but it is also fascinating to learn all these details surrounding the planned sequel to The Bodyguard.
The Bodyguard can be streamed on Netflix.
