The role that was portrayed by Michael Kelly in the 2013 film is a major character appearing in DC Comics since 1973. Although his character wasn’t very important in the film, it appears that James Gunn plans to change that.

So with the potential casting of Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, it seems that Gunn’s plans extend beyond just Superman. But who exactly is Steve Lombard and why is he so important?

Who Is Steve Lombard?

In a June 1973 issue of Superman, the character of Steve Lombard made his debut in DC Comics. Lombard was a workplace adversary to Superman’s Clark Kent who actually became his nemesis due to a sports injury.

Being an NFL player (and physically inspired by Joe Namath), Steve Lombard was a quarterback player who sustained serious injuries to his already injured knee while saving a baby falling from a building. An experimentation with radiation cures his knees but also creates an energy that resembles him.

Winning the NFL match through his energy, Steve Lombard quickly turns evil until he is brought to justice by Superman. After he retires from the NFL, Lombard joins Metropolitan News as a sportscaster and works alongside Clark Kent.

So, the character of Steve Lombard has had a history with Superman and Beck Bennett is now sporting a mustache very similar to Lombard. Bennett having a photo with the cast of Superman adds more fuel to the rumor of him portraying Lombard in the upcoming film.

With James Gunn set as the director and David Corenswet as the new Clark Kent, Superman is set for a release date of 11 July 2025 in theaters across the U.S.
