Godzilla Minus One is Japan’s Reply to Oppenheimer?

Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, was one of the most eagerly anticipated films of the year. The public was also drawn to it by its impressive cast, which included Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. With a global box office total of over $953 million and critical acclaim, the movie is now the third highest-grossing movie of 2023. Despite being a huge box office hit, it did not have the highest IMDb rating.

According to Kaiju News Outlet, Godzilla Minus One has surpassed Oppenheimer to become the highest-rated blockbuster film of 2023 on IMDb. Reviews for the Ryunosuke Kamiki starrer film have been overwhelmingly positive thus far.

The Takashi Yamazaki film, which opened in the US and Canada on December 1, was predicted to earn between $11 and $12 million in its first weekend of sales. It was released alongside Silent Night, The Shift, and Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé. According to a report from Deadline, the film debuted at $11 million, shattering the opening weekend record for a live-action Japanese film in the US.

As of December 6, Godzilla Minus One had made an incredible $40,990,124 worldwide. Of that total, $14,360,157 had been earned in the United States and Canada, $26,039,972 in Japan, and $589,995 in other territories (via The Numbers).
