Daisy Ridley debuted as Rey in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, directed by J. J. Abrams. The film emerged as a major commercial success, grossing $2.071 billion at the global box office. In 2023, it was announced that Ridley would be reprising her role in a new Star Wars film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. During an interview with IndieWire, Ridley spoke about returning to the space opera franchise.

The story for me is very worth telling and very exciting. And the thought of working with Sharmeen, whose films are fantastic, is very exciting.

Ridley made the above statement explaining that she wasn’t expecting to return to Star Wars anytime soon. However, she was excited to work with Obaid-Chinoy, whose previous credits include the Marvel series Ms. Marvel. From Ridley’s comments, it is evident that Obaid-Chinoy’s involvement in the project was a major factor behind her decision to reprise the role of Rey.

I felt I learned so much just generally, and I felt like I was able to do so many different things in that performance.

Ridley made the above statement, explaining how the role of Rey helped her develop as an actor, while also allowing her to experiment with her performance. Therefore, it is likely that Ridley chose to reprise the role in the upcoming film to continue experimenting with the character.

The yet-untitled film directed by Obaid-Chinoy is expected to follow Ridley’s Rey several years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. It will reportedly follow Rey as she tries to rebuild the Jedi Order. In an Instagram post, Obaid-Chinoy confirmed that the film will focus on Rey as a Jedi Master with her own Jedi Academy. However, the film currently does not have a confirmed release date.

The Star Wars movies and spin-off television shows are streaming on Disney+.
