Martin Scorsese, with decades of experience at his disposal, upholds the architecture of the acute cinematic emblem that often acts as an encyclopedia of cinematic history itself. While discovering Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon, the actor believed in his encyclopedic prowess. “I think Marty watched Certain Women,” Gladstone said in an interview with Interview Magazine about her landing on the huge role in Scorsese’s crime drama. The actor confirmed the director’s enormous knowledge of cinema while reflecting on how she got the role.

“He’s encyclopedic. He’s the entire culture of film history walking around in one body. Initially, it was a selftape. I had a couple of different people help me. Before the rewrites, I had three pages of some pretty mouthy dialogue. But I was struggling so much with the scenes that, when COVID shut everything down and the project went quiet for a minute, I assumed that I’d blown the audition. About a year later, I got a request to Zoom with Martin Scorsese.”

But the process of the movie, especially the development part of it was not so quick. “I’d heard that the rewrites completely did a 180,” Gladstone added. Leonardo DiCaprio was supposed to be playing Tom White, Jesse Plemons’s character.

The first meeting “with Marty was on my dad’s birthday,” was indeed the spark of celebration for Gladstone. And then, “a week later, Marty set up a meeting with me and him and Leo over Zoom,” the 37-year-old told Interview Magazine.

“That was a two-and-a-half-hour conversation. I had my sides next to me and was expecting that we would do some scene work, but it was just a preliminary discussion about the project. Then, when I got a call on December 1st from my manager, it was the offer.”

The day that she got cast is “when I went to the Osage language app and taught myself the orthography as best as I could,” she revealed further. The preparation for the role evolved as days went by and she was ready by the beginning of the production.

Killers of the Flower Moon in 4K Ultra HD digital print is available for purchase and rent on Prime Videos and other platforms. The movie will debut on Apple TV Plus in early 2024.
