The Witcher series has had games with some amazing stories and all three of the main games so far in the franchise have been rated quite highly on Metacritic by fans and critics. The first game in the series, The Witcher, was released back in 2007 and an enhanced edition of the same was released a year later but never made it to any of the consoles.
While fans also discussed other games like Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, and Silent Hill 2, The Witcher was quite a prominent reply. While the first game in the series had a brilliant storyline, the gameplay was highly disappointing to many fans who have now come together to recall their experience with the game.
The Witcher Has One Hell of a Story, One Forgetful Gameplay Experience
A Reddit post has brought the gaming community together, voicing their opinion on what each of them thought was the best game with forgetful gameplay. The game’s storyline has been regarded as the best in the series by some gamers which was ruined not just by a broken combat system but also the frustratingly long load times.
Players felt that combat in the game was “repetitive and unresponsive”. The unresponsiveness in between combat also annoyed gamers quite a lot, with Geralt not responding to actions along with targets being switched automatically, as this led to players taking damage when fighting multiple enemies at once.
The game’s UI is also deemed overdesigned by players who called it “poorly laid out”. The HUD had major flaws as some symbols displaying the player’s status faded out completely. Even the quest tracking was flawed as players could only track one quest at a time.
The quests in the game are also quite riddled with bugs, and one of the oft-repeated bugs is when Geralt occasionally receives no potions after completing a quest, which stops the player from progressing in the game. This was ‘fixed’ by forcing players to restart the game all over again.
Other Games With Terrible Gameplay as Mentioned by Players
2007 also witnessed the release of the first Assassin’s Creed which was known for introducing parkour and stealth. One of the players commented, “The stealth mechanics are okay but feel sloppy”. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was a 2003 release that also had a lot of players complain that “the controls don’t work half the time”, especially after combat. The issue forced players to save progress and restart the game to gain back the movement controls.
Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 were also got mentioned by players for having a combat system that felt “antiquated”. Players also mentioned Guardians of the Galaxy which came out just a couple of years back, for having “the most bland shooting”, even if the story, puzzles, and the dialogs were all quite good.
Silent Hill 2 also got a mention for the rugged maneuverability of the character which one player compared to a “boat stuck on dry land” and called the controls in the game “the scariest monster”. Dead Island also got a mention for having combat abilities that one player mentioned to have been just “Kick, Swing”, on repeat.
2019’s Control also got a huge mention for very much the same reason, despite being one of the best-looking games graphically, as the gameplay was mentioned by a player to be “incredibly boring and rarely deviates from the format of heading to a marked location on the map, kill every enemy in the room, rinse and repeat”.
Even Witcher 3 did not miss the list, as one player mentioned how the combat in the game is “hit and miss” as players had a hard time moving inside close quarters during combat.
There may be games that get absolutely adored by some while also getting slammed by most others, and while visual experience is important, the overall gameplay might be a huge deciding factor in terms of whether or not a game is remembered for being absolutely good or terrible.
