Henry Cavill is undeniably a 21st-century superstar and there are not many actors who can say this with certainty. While he isn’t on the level of Tom Cruise, he certainly commands a large fanbase that shows up for every project of his. He enjoys this fan following thanks to the DC franchise where he played Superman and Netflix’s The Witcher, where he played Geralt of Rivia.

However, Cavill’s time as both characters is now over. He was left out of one and he left the other one due to writing issues. But once upon a time, at the beginning of it all, he was the one who made the biggest impression on The Witcher showrunner, Lauren Hissrich. So much so that she couldn’t get his voice out of her head.

In a Men’s Health magazine interview, The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich admitted that Henry Cavill’s impression of Geralt stuck in her mind even though she met 207 other actors for the role. She said:

“All the time I was writing, I kept hearing Henry’s voice in my head. In the books, Geralt is fearsome, but he also has this amazing dry wit. We needed someone to play both ends of the spectrum, someone who could see all the trauma of the world he’s in but could also step back and roll his eyes once in a while.”

Fans of Cavill as well as of the books would agree that the Man of Steel star is definitely the embodiment of Geralt. As such, his leaving was a big blow to the show as well as its popularity. Season 3 will be the last time everyone will see him as the titular witcher, as after that, Liam Hemsworth will take over the role from season 4.

The Witcher season 3 will premiere in two parts. Volume 1 will stream from June 29 and Volume 2 will arrive on July 27. This will be the last time Henry Cavill dons the iconic white wig and medallion while holding the sword. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said this season will culminate many things. As per her:

“In so many ways, Season 3 is the culmination of what we’ve been building toward all along. We get to see everything on the Continent change, which is super exciting.”

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she also said that the season, which will see Time of Contempt, the fourth book in The Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski to get adapted, will honor Cavill’s contribution to the show. She said:

“Henry has given so much to the show and so we want to honor that appropriately. What is so interesting is that season 3, to me, is the closest thing that we’ve done as a one-to-one adaptation of the books.”

One of the biggest complaints till now regarding the Netflix show is the blatant disregard for the source material. As such, it remains to be seen if season 3 will be able to win the fans back.

The Witcher season 3, Volume 1, will stream on Netflix from June 29, 2023.
