The Witcher has been condemned to die a slow death and by the looks of it, the fans are aware of it. The showrunners, scriptwriters, and actors involved, on the other hand, show no awareness of the fact. The Netflix epic fantasy series that caused such an uproar when it came out in 2019 has left behind the terrains of acceptability and respect and transgressed boundaries to land in a place that is entirely devoid of honor – toward the source material as well as the actor who made the franchise what it is today.
The Witcher Season 4 Likely to Digress Further From Source
One of the aspects that made the Netflix series so watch-worthy was Henry Cavill’s rendition of Geralt of Rivia. It wasn’t only his immense well of knowledge for Andrzej Sapkowski’s work but his expertise regarding the adapted video game series of the same. The extent of Cavill’s know-how on the subject reached so far that the actor re-enacted several dialogues within the live-action series in the same octave and inflection of voice as Doug Cockle from the video game series. No actor is that committed.
But The Witcher killed two birds with one stone – and not in a way that benefits the series at all. A slightly changed character backstory here and the introduction of a new villain there created enough ripples within the narrative to make the fans retort against what was being presented on the screen. And the fandom was not the only aspect affected by the writers’ decision to put their own stamp on the live-action series.
Rumors of Henry Cavill fighting to keep the story true to the source abounds and may as well be true given how he announced his exit months after completing filming for Season 3. If the actor who advocated so loudly for the series, fought to be in it, and decisively promised to stay for as long as 7 seasons announces he is done with the project halfway through, something must have been very wrong with The Witcher to make him turn away from the otherwise beloved series.
Henry Cavill’s Absence Robs The Witcher of Its Status
Every once in a while, an actor is born who progresses through the years with the sole purpose of one day coming across such a role that has essentially been made for them. And fate, in all its glory, intertwines the two together, and history gets made. Without Henry Cavill, The Witcher is not really worthy of being regarded as a watch-worthy series at all. The actor has imbued so much of himself into Geralt that his absence takes away all the aspects of the character that made the audience first fall in love with the series.
On top of everything else, rumors of Henry Cavill fighting to save The Witcher now hit so hard that his exit makes the tragedy of the series losing its direction even more painful. Without the actor and his guidance, The Witcher is hardly likely to survive past Season 5 and if the fans have anything to say about it, it’s that Netflix should simply rip the bandaid off and be done with it after Season 3.
The Witcher is now available for streaming on Netflix. Season 3 will premiere in 2023.
