There Are Some Things Left For Idris Elba’s Luther To Do!

Premiering in 2010, Luther narrated the tale of DCI John Luther. A homicide detective with a penchant for thinking like a murderer helped him solve the cases but he wasn’t much of a social person. The series became so famous that Luther ran for 5 seasons before going off-air in 2019.

The series was followed by a Netflix film titled Luther: The Fallen Sun back in 2023. In a recent interview, Idris Elba sat down for a chat with Radio Times. During their talks, Elba mentioned Luther and how there are some things left for Luther to do (hinting at a potential sixth season)!

“The coat is still waiting, yeah. Luther is my legacy project. It’s the character I’ve played the longest in my life; there are definitely still things I want him to do.”

It was back in 2023 when Idris Elba revealed in a separate interview with Collider that he wanted to do another Luther film after the success of the 2023 Netflix film!

“Luther ended up being one of the top five most streamed films on Netflix, which is an incredible achievement, since it was the first film from the television show. I’m hoping to make another one.”

Being proud of the series, Idris Elba feels so much love for Luther that he once compared his character to that of James Bond! Talking about espionage and banging through the door, Elba claimed that John Luther is a modern-day bad guy compared to James Bond.

With James Bond being one of the oldest franchises to date, there have been numerous comparisons of James Bond with other heroes. Bond has been compared with Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne from The Bourne franchise, Idris Elba’s Luther, and even Rowan Atkinson’s Johnny English (just kidding).

In an interview with Radio Times, Elba revealed the comparison between his character of John Luther and James Bond.

“Not ‘better’ [than Bond], no. Luther’s equally engaging, equally s*xy, and great to see visually. But Bond is from a universe where espionage was the way to capture.”

He further continued,

“Luther is from the world where you bang on the door, ‘Are you in there? I’m coming in.’ I think Luther fits with a bit more of a modern-day bad guy as opposed to someone from the taking-over-the-world style.”

Although nothing can be confirmed or denied at the moment, the world would surely welcome a Luther series with Idris Elba reprising his role. On the other hand, Idris Elba voiced the role of Knuckles but did not find great success with the project.

The 2010 BBC series received a rating of 8.4/10 on IMDB and a whopping 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.

With 5 seasons to its name, Luther is currently available to stream on Peacock in the U.S.
