Emma Stone has been one of the most spectacularly performing actresses in Hollywood, almost always in the spotlight for one thing or the other. But as much as she is acclaimed for her captivating acting skills, she has also been criticized and the center of controversy for quite a few of her roles. However, the La La Land actress isn’t one to stay quiet but rather one who steps up to address the issue and clear out her name.
That’s exactly what Stone did in public during the 76th annual Golden Globes ceremony when the event co-host Sandra Oh took a direct jab at her and Scarlett Johansson for having played Asian characters on the big screens despite being non-Asians themselves.
Emma Stone Apologized To Everyone At The Golden Globes
Back in 2015, Emma Stone played an Asian-Hawaiian character in Aloha – a role for which she earned a lot of backlash amid the controversy surrounding her for having played an Asian character on the big screen despite being white herself. Furthermore, she was also accused of whitewashing for the same.
This went on and on until the 76th annual Golden Globes back in 2019 when co-host of the event Sandra Oh directly took a jab at the actress and Scarlett Johansson, who played a Japanese in Ghost in the Shell, for the same. The Invincible actress jokingly said:
“Crazy Rich Asians is nominated tonight for Best Picture-Musical or Comedy. It’s the first studio film with an Asian-American lead since Ghost in the Shell and Aloha.”
To this, The Amazing Spider-Man actress couldn’t hold back and burst out shouting amid the laughter of the audience:
“I’m sorry!”
Although Sandra Oh made it clear that there were no hard feelings and that she was only joking when she made the comment, Emma Stone’s long-wanted apology was taken seriously and accepted by most of the outraged audience.
Emma Stone Openly Addressed The Issue Of Whitewashing In Hollywood
Following the never-ending controversy surrounding her after her film Aloha but before her apology at the Golden Globes, Emma Stone addressed the issue of whitewashing in Hollywood during an interview, as reported by Daily Mail.
In the interview, which was conducted back in 2015, she is reported to have said:
“I’ve learned on a macro level about the insane history of whitewashing in Hollywood and how prevalent the problem truly is. It’s ignited a conversation that’s very important. There are some flaws in the system. My eyes have been opened in many ways this year.”
While whitewashing has indeed been a sensitive, complex, and not usually talked about topic in Hollywood, an actress like Stone talking about it changed even the perspectives of the worldwide audiences who were making her the center of their backlash.
Irrespective of the fact of whether she and Scarlett Johansson have played Asian characters on the big screen, Emma Stone’s honest and genuine apology in public at the Golden Globes award seems to have made up for all the things that the audience felt it was wronged.
